    Apollo Program

    1967 the crew of Apollo 1 were killed during a training exercise. This was caused by an electrical spark somewhere in the Apollo capsule's 31 miles of wiring. The apollo program was considered a "space race".

    Vietnam War

    France controlled most of the resource-rich Southeast Asia . But nationalist independence movements had begun to develop. A young Vietnamese nationalist, Ho Chi Minh turned to the communists for help in his struggle. During 1930s, Ho's Indochinese communist party led revolts and strikes against the French. The French responded by jailing Vietnamese protesters.They also sentenced Ho to death.The Japanese were forced out of Vietnam after their defeat in 1945.

    An Iron Curtain divides East and West Europe . Germany had been split into two sections. Churchill's phrase "phrase curtain" came to represent Europe's division into mostly democratic Western Europe and Communist Eastern Europe

    U.S secretary of State George Marshall proposed that United States give aid to needy European countries. This was called the Marshall plan. The Marshall plan would provide food, machinery, and other materials to rebuild Western Europe

    Allied planes took off and landed every three minutes in West Berlin. On 278,000 flights, pilots brought in 2.3 million tons of food, fuel, medicine, and even Christmas gifts to West Berlin.

    NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Western Europe nations joined with United States and Canada to form a defensive military alliance. The Soviet union saw NATO as a threat and created their own alliance called Warsaw Pact. It included: Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albina.

    Communists take over china

    After the Japanese invaded China there was a civil war between nationalists and communists, and deciding how China's government should rule. United states aided the Nationalists . But by 1945 communists controlled a lot of northern China. In 1949 the communists leader, Mao Zedong, gained control of the country.

    Korean War

    North Korea invades South Korea with the support from the USSR. South Korea is supported by united Nations. China helps North Korea when South Korea starts to win. Cease fire in 1953 ends fighting between both Koreas, splitting them at the 38th parallel.

    The Soviet Union successfully launched a satellite. As the tiny satellite orbited the earth, Americans reacted with dismay that the Soviets could have gotten so far ahead of the supposedly technologically superior United States.

    Great Leap Forward

    Mao Zedong created the five year plan to expand his success. This included large collective farms. The communes were a disaster due to poor planning and inefficiency. Communes falsely reported high production of food to impress Mao, it left them starving.

    This was a dangerous confrontation between United States and Soviet Union. United States found out they had missiles in Cuba. This caused a close nuclear conflict.

    Revolt in Czechoslovakia

    Alexander Dubek put an end to people who were free. Cremlins suspected a counter revolution. There was a military check. Germans invaded Czechoslovakia. Shoved communism into help.

    Cultural Revolution

    The Red Guards plan was to create a society where everyone was equal. Colleges and schools got shut down by them, and in order to be "purified" you had to work everything off. People who resisted were executed or imprisoned. In 1968, Mao ordered the army to stop the Red Guards.
