Potsdam Conference
after the Potsdam conference the U.S. Made a bomb called the atomic bomb. They planned to use it against Japan. They demanded a couple time from Japan and used the atomic bomb when they declined. The U.S. Wanted Japan to not be in the war anymore by telling them to surrender. The U.S. gave Japan a chance to go out the easy way or the hard way. Japan chose the hard way probably not on knowing they chose the hard way(Potsdam Conference). -
NATO
The NATO was established in 1949 and broke up 1991. The Soviet Union’s leader allowed a better economic and freedom for the soviet bloc, and a independence movement was made and grew strong. This happen because the soviet union began to break apart. The NATO would affect the Soviet Union in the Warsaw Pact. The way it affected several Warsaw pact countries is that it made the Soviet Union fall and a reunited Germany join the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). -
Korean War
The Korean war started in June 25 1950 to July 27, 1953. In those years the U.S. sent and 15 other counties in the United Nations sent men to fight in the war. This is because North Korea, with help from the Soviet, Union started to invade South Korea. In all about 2,700,37 men die from the war. Korea stayed divided in the 21st century(Korean War). -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe created an alliance to put troops and weapons in Eastern Europe. Both Soviet Union and Eastern Europe wanted a strong defensive alliance in response to nato. So they made an alliance thinking That they could have a great alliance. But this lead to nationalism and hostility against Soviet Union. Their response was forced from the Soviet Union(Warsaw Pact). -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam war is a civil war against North and South Vietnam. The way the Vietnam war started was when some people in Vietnam wanted communism and some didn’t. Since they disagreed they split and fought. The U.S. fought against communism but left before the war ended. At the end communism won. Also North and South Vietnam combined into one country again (Vietnam War). -
Suez Crisis
In 1956 British and French forces invaded and occupied the canal zone. They did this to get more money. They are getting the money from the canal zone by collecting tolls from the ship's passing by. They need this money to pay for dam construction. At the end it caused Arab and Egyptian nationalism. They also regain shipping rights in the straits of tiran (Suez Crisis). -
Hungarian Revolution
In 1956 people revolted in hungary. The people of hungary revolted because of a speech the soviet leader nikita khrushchev gave. The speech he gave attacked the period of joseph stalin’s rule. Because of this resolution thing slowed down. For example the evolution toward some internal autonomy(Hungarian Revolution). -
Space Race/Sputnik
The world's first satellite was sent to space in 1957. Its also when a space race began between the Soviet Union and the United States. The U.S. had to join to keep up with the Soviet Union or they would be left behind in technology. If the U.S. didn’t compete they seem weak to the Soviet Union and a war would probably begin. Because of the race the space and weapons programs were accelerated.(Sputnik). -
Berlin wall
The Berlin wall was built in 1961. It was built to divide Germany from Berlin. It was built to also to keep people from leaving Germany easily. The Berlin wall stayed for a while dividing Germany and Berlin. The border reopened in 1989 also getting rid of the Berlin wall(Berlin wall). -
Cuban Missile Crisis
In October of 1962 Cuba was invaded by the Soviet Union and used missiles. I think this happen because of the arms race. It’s the arms race because the U.S. And Soviet Union built more and more bombs and the Soviet Union felt stronger than the U.S. at one point. But they seen what would could happen if they fought with the super weapons and how dangerous it is. Because of this crisis the U.S. (History.com Staff). -
Six-Day war
In 1967 Israel attacked Egypt. They attacked Egypt thinking that they were weakened from recent events. Israel attacked with planes and airstrikes. Because of this war there were hundreds of thousands of refugees built. Then more than one million Palestinians in the occupied territories under Israeli rule(Six-Day War). -
Glasnost & Perestroika
Gorbachev launched the glasnost program in the 1980s. He did this because open up the political system and democratizing was the only way to overcome the soviet political apparatus (glasnost.). Gorbachev also launched the perestroika program in the 1980s. He did this to restructure soviet political and economic policy. From these programs they enlarged freedom for the people (perestroika).
