    During World war 2 the united staes and the soviet union fought together but the relationship was tense. By the end of World War 2 the United States agreed that the best defence against the Soviet and their communism was by containment, but offered suport for those attempting resistence

    Armed forces from communist North Korea attacked South Korea setting off the Korean War. The United States quickly go into action and fight against North Korea in a bloody and frustrating three year war.

    The Korean war was a long and bloody war the took place in a three year time peroid leaving a number of around 5 million people dead. And although the war was over the two countries are still divided today.

    The Vietnam war was a long and costly war leaving many dead at a estimate of around 3 million dead with about 58,000 of those being americans. The war began when the counrty was divided into north and south Vietnam. The North's government was communist and the South's government was allied with the west.When the souths president concelled elections that would have benifited the communist allied with the north, a civil war began.

    In effort of keeping the refugees from attemptling to leave East Berling the communist governmeant of East Germany began to build the Berlin Wall to divide East and Wast berlin. The construction of the wall caused a short crisis and the wall itself came to symbolize the Cold War.

    The Cuban missile crisis was a confruntation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. After a two week standoff, Soviet leaders moved the missiles when the United States agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey and promised not to attack Cuba.

    In 1968 when president Richard Nixon was elected president he sought to what he called detene, or reduce tension between the superpowers. One result of his efforts was to start negotiations known as th Stragegic Arms Limitations Talks, or SALT I. The talks led to agreements limiting the number of nuclear weapons held by each side.

    The Soviet government was in crisis, Communist party leaders sought to end Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms and perserve the Soviet Union by taking over the Soviet governmeant in a coup d'etat. Although the coup failed Govbachev's power was largely gone. Republic afer republic declared indpendence and by the end of 1991 the soviet government ceased to function.
