The Soviet Union began to secretly install missiles in Cuba to launch attacks on U.S. cities. An American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. The U.S. refused to allow this and after about 13 days and negotiating things the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles.

Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21. The purpose was to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to earth.

It happened 5 days after half a million people gathered in East Berlin in a mass protest. The wall was dividing East and West Germany and it crumbled down. East German leaders had tried to calm mounting protests by loosening the borders and making travel easier for East Germans.
