An American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. The U.S. refused to allow this and after about 13 days and negotiating things the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles. -
Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21. The purpose was to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to earth. -
