    Marshall Plan
    This plan provided $13 billion dollars to rebuild Europe. This plan helped Western Europe recover rapidly and help preserve political stability.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    After the Soviets blocked off all land, rail , and water routes into West Berlin Western powers organized the Berlin airlift. The Berlin airlift was a massive effort to supply Western Berlin by air at the time one plane was landing another was taking off in Berlin.

    War in Korea
    When the Soviet Union and the United States divided the Korean Peninsula the Soviet Union took the northern half and the U.S. too the southern half of Korea. The Soviet Union established a Communist government, while U.S. supported a non-Communist regime. So the North Koreans decided to attack South Korea to unite the country under a Communist government.

    Less than a year after the United States tested their first hydrogen bomb the Soviets were able to tested their own hydrogen bomb. This made both sides change their military tactics and increase their stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

    After the successful launch of Sputnik American's feared that the Soviets had leaped ahead in military technology so in 1958 the U.S. government established NASA. This returned the U.S. to the forefront of space research.

    A confrontation stared after the Soviet Union installed nuclear missiles in Cuba. After a two-week standoff the Soviets removed the missiles after the U.S. agreed to remove their missiles from Turkey and promised to not attack Cuba.

    The Cuban missile crisis help convince the United Unites and the Soviet Union that there was a need for arms control. So in 1963 they agreed on a Test Ban Treaty it outlawed nuclear testing in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater.

    After war African Americans made major advances because of their brave service during war. In 1964 the U.S. congress passed the Civil Rights Act and the next year the Voting Rights Act. This eliminated longstanding barriers to equality for African Americans.
  • SALT I and II

    SALT I and II
    Richard Nixon wanted to reduce the tension between the super powers when he got elected as president of the United States, one of the outcomes of his negotiations was SALT I which led to the ABM Treaty. The ABM Treaty prevented the development of weapons designed to shoot down nuclear missiles. The two sides later began a new round of talks, called SALT II these talks resulted in an arms control treaty in 1979.
