    The Berlin Airlift was one of the most significant events in the Cold War. This is because it changed the opinion of other countries opinions on the United States. Essentially, in response to the Soviet Blockade, the United States and Britain flew in 1.5 million tons of supplies to the cut-off area. This caused a favorable impression of the USA to appear in the hearts of the people.
  • The First Proxy War: Korea

    This was the first instance of actual proxy warfare used by the Soviet Union and the USA. They used the country of Korea to go up against each other's forces. The communist north was supported by the Soviet Union. The defending south was supported by the United States.

    An American plane was shot down by the Soviet Union. They used some false reason in order to try to justify this, and they tried to get the USA to stop their recon over the Soviet Union. This caused major outrage and caused tensions between the two countries to rise.

    A step back from all the warfare being waged against each other subtly, another form of competition rose for the two superpowers. They were competing over who had the superior space-force. It was a race to the moon, and in 1969, the USA won the race to the moon.

    During this time, the Soviet Union had nuclear warheads placed in Cuba, directly capable of threatening the United States. Likewise, the USA had nuclear missiles set up in Turkey. Both sides tactically came to an understanding and retreated from the two respective areas. This is the closest the world has come to nuclear war.

    The USA and the Soviet Union fought a second proxy war using the inhabitants of the Vietnamese nation. They did this to support their own agendas, and to actually fight against each other through the usage of smaller countries. This was one of the biggest events in the Cold War.

    NPT, also known as the Non-Proliferation Treaty, was an international treaty basically used to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, and as a result, decrease the danger of a lot of countries possessing such dangerous weapons. It was extended to an indefinite time-range in 1995.

    This was the third proxy war used by the USA and the Soviet Union to further their own agendas. The USA supported the rebels of Afghanistan, while the Soviet Union supported the other side, and through this form of fighting, they were in way gauging each other's strengths, as well as causing damage to the other side.

    The fall of the Berlin Wall happened in the late 1980s, and it was all because of Russia pulling out of Germany, and as a result, the East Germany leaders had no backers. A series of misunderstandings led to the Berlin Wall being basically made useless through the careless words from one of the leaders. This signified the end of communism in most countries as we know it, at least back then.

    The fall of the Soviet Union signified the end of the Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union. This was all due to the electing of Gorbachev who revolutionized the country for the better, and due to changes in his economic reforms, internal affairs, and international relations, the country took a turn for the better, and the economy slowly began to recover. This was also the end of communism as we know it in Russia which also signified the end of the Cold War.
