    NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed on April 4th 1949. It is a military alliance between countries in Europe. The countries were Belgium, Denmark, France, Canada, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, the UK, and the U.S..
  • The Korean War.

    The Korean War.
    The Korean war was fought between North and South Korea. The war began on June 25th 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea. It started because North Korea supported the Soviet Union and South Korea supported the U.S..
  • Death of Joseph Stalin

    Death of Joseph Stalin
    Joseph Stalin died on March 25th 1953. He died of a heart attack at the age of 74. He was succeeded by Nikita Khrushchev.
  • The Warsaw pact

    The Warsaw pact
    The Warsaw pact was a treaty that stated that if another member is attacked all of the others have to help fight. It was signed by The Soviet Union, Albania, Romania, Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. It was set up by Marshal Ivan S. of the Soviet Union.

    The Space Race was against the Soviet Union and the U.S. It was a race to see who could reach space first. Researchers say that the U.S. won because they were able to land on the moon. The race lasted until 1975.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    The Soviet Union released Sputnik on October 4th 1957. It was the first artificial satellite released. It weighed 183.9 pounds and it took only 98 minutes to orbit the earth.
  • U-2 Incident

    U-2 Incident
    On May of 1969 the USSR shot down an American U-2 spy plane and captured its pilot. The U.S. found out and admitted to having spy planes flying over Russia. The USSR then sentenced him to 10 years in prison. Shortly after two years of being in jail the US was able to get him out by doing the first ever spy trade.

    The Berlin Wall
    The Berlin Wall was built on August 13th 1961. The Berlin wall's purpose was to keep the western side of Berlin from coming into the east side. It stood until November 9th 1989 when the east side that citizens could pass through whenever they wanted.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis
    A U.S. spy plane saw the construction of a Soviet Union nuclear missile base near Cuba. President Kennedy demanded that the missiles need to be removed immediately. The Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles if the U.S. would not invade Cuba.

    John F. Kennedy dies
    On November 22nd 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. He was shot while on a visit to Dallas. Lyndon Johnson then became president after the incident.
  • Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was fought between North Vietnam and the U.S. defending southern Vietnam. More than 3 million people were killed in the war. North Vietnam eventually signed a peace treaty with the U.S. that stopped the fighting.

    SALT
    On May 26th 1972 the strategic arms limitation treaty was signed. The treaty was signed between the U.S. and the USSR. It’s purpose was to restrain the countries from using nuclear weapons and missiles.
  • Apollo-Soyuz test project

    Apollo-Soyuz test project
    The Apollo-Soyuz test project was a space venture between the U.S. and the USSR. This project acted as an end to the space race. The two combined two spacecrafts to create one.
  • End of the Warsaw pact.

    End of the Warsaw pact.
    In the late 1980's anti soviet movements started to break down the pact. then one after one the countries started to withdraw. The pacts Political Consultative Committee met to stop the pact.
  • End of the Soviet Union

    End of the Soviet Union
    On December 26th 1991 the Soviet Union came to an end. It split into 15 individual sections. This happened because the west won and wanted freedom.
