    Potsdam Conference 2

    This conference was also the time when the U.S had told about having an atomic bomb in their power and that they would use it against Japan. It was then decided that they would split Germany into four so that each of the allies including France may get a part of the Country.

    Potsdam Conference 1

    The last allied conference of World War II was held in July 17-August 2, 1945 which the three allied powers attended. The U.S president Harry S. Truman, the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who was then replaced Clement Attlee who succeeded as the new prime minister and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. During the conference the allies had but two goals and that was battle plans against Japan and how they were going to control Germany after the losing the war.

    The United States,Canada and 9 European countries had started the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which was made so that if a numerous of them were to attacked that those who attacked declared war against them all. As years passed on 14 countries also joined Nato, in May 14, 1955 the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact in response to West Germany being admitted into Nato in 1955.

    In 1979 the U.S had aided Afghanistan rebels who were fighting the Soviet Union who invaded them because the Soviet Union was beginning to expand.

    As years went on the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev allowed for greater economic and political freedom in the Soviet Union as the Soviet Union began to unravel and after Germany was united because the berlin wall was torn down they joined Nato. After Germany had fully joined Nato other countries began to leave the Warsaw Pact it wasn’t until 1991 when the Warsaw Pact was dissolved

    Korean War 1

    North Korea and South Korea had both fought each other over communism.North Korea had sided with the Soviet Union while South Korea had sided with the United States. North Korea and the Soviet had invaded South which made the United Nations security Council urged the United Nations members to assist South Korea with fighting off the North because North Korea had ignored the immediate cease-fire.

    Korean War 2

    Once the U.S and other countries sent troops to assist the South was able to make North Korea retreat to the north of the 38th parallel.The South and it’s allies then advanced into North territory which then angered China a communist country on North Korea’s northern border.China then sent in troops which drove the South back to the 38th parallel.

    Warsaw pact 1

    The warsaw pact was originally made for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as a treaty for friendship,cooperation and mutual assistance. The Soviet and Eastern created alliance put troops and weapons in Eastern Europe. This alliance was also made to establish a strong defense alliance in response to nato control over the east.

    The Warsaw pact had caused nationalism and hostility against soviet response in several countries Hungary,Poland and Czechoslovakia where they began to rebel the Soviets had fought back but in 1990 withdrew from the 3 countries.

    The Vietnam war was fought between North and South Vietnam who were fighting about if the country should be Communist, North Vietnam was for Communism while the South was against this and the United States decided to help prevent this but failed.

    In 1954 the French and the Viet Minh held a meeting that divided the country into North and South Vietnam,people from the United States,the Soviet Union and several other countries had participated in a meeting that would decide what would happen to Vietnam now that the war between them and the French was over

    Vietnam War 3

    In 1963 a group a of army officers took over the the South Vietnam government because of the South’s leader Diem who imprisoned and killed hundreds of Buddhists. In August 1974 South Vietnam had fell apart quickly after the United States cut back its military aid with the South because the North invaded the South entered the capital of the South and ended the war and reunited the country and made it Communism.
  • Suez Crisis 1

    The Egyptian president,Gamal Abdel Nasser,nationalized the Suez Canal and the company was controlled by the French and the British. America and Britain had decided not to finance Egypt’s construction because of their ties with the Soviet Union. Britain and France secretly prepared military action to regain control of the Suez canal because Nasser declared martial law in the canal zone and seized control of the Suez company to pay for the dam’s construction.

    Hungarian Revolution

    In 1956 in Hungary there was a popular uprising that was followed by Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev who attacked the period of Joseph Stalin’s rule. Imre Nagy became premier, agreeing to establish a multiparty system. On Nov. 1, 1956, he declared Hungarian neutrality and appealed to the United Nations for support because of the rising tide of unrest and discontent in Hungary broke out in active fighting. Nagy was then executed for treason while the Soviet Union had invaded to stop the revolutio
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    The Soviet Union had made an artificial satellite named Sputnik-1 this became a shock for other countries mainly the U.S who had wanted to be the first to launched a satellite into space.Sputnik served to intensify the arms race and raise cold war tensions and because the Soviets were successful with this launch it made the U.S military feel as though it had generally fallen behind in developing new technology.
  • Suez Crisis 2

    In October 29, 1958 Israeli brigades had invaded the canal which then Britain and France then demanded that both the Israeli and Egyptians withdrew from the canal. Nasser was the victor of the Suez Crisis and was known as a hero,Israeli did not get freedom to use the canal but shipping rights while Britain and France had lost the influence it had over the Middle East.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban missile crisis had made a great deal of nuclear war tensions between the U.S and the Soviet Union because of this the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev had made an offer to remove the missiles place in Cuban and that in exchange the U.S not invade Cuba. But after Fidel Castro a revolutionary leader had took over Castro and made it dependent on the Soviet Union the U.S had then saw from a U-2 plane that Cuba was preparing a missile for installation.

    Glasnost- Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev instituted policy known as glasnost which was Russian for “openness” and the policy meant that you could have open discussion of political and social issues. After talking about glasnost Gorbachev talked about a program that aim was to restructuring Soviet economic and political policy.

    There were fundamental changes in the Soviet political system, Communist party power was reduced and elections took place for leaders because of the enlarged individual freedom that was given to the country because of glasnost.
