Cold War Timeline

  • Winston Churchill

    Winston spoke a speech against communism and tells the people the problem with communism. He talks about the "Iron Curtain" that the Soviet Union put up and how the countries on the communist side have no more power over themselves.
  • Zhdanov Doctrine

    The Soviets responded to the Marshall Plan with their own Zhdanov Doctrine. The doctrine claimed that America was trying to control the world through American imperialism. They said they would eliminate imperialism and fascism while incorporating democracy.
  • Nuclear Weapons

    The Soviet UNion created the first nuclear bomb. Now both the U.S. and the Soviet Union's Cold War escalated to a new level.
  • McCarthyism

    The government accused thousands of Americans of being or supporting communism and interrogated them. Many Hollywood stars and intellectuals were blacklisted.
  • Space Race

    The Soviets were ahead when they sent a satellite and a man to space. Then America sent Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969 with Neil Armstrong.
  • Berlin Wall

    After John F Kennedy was elected in 1960 the Soviet Union made the Berlin Wall to stop citizens in the Eastern side from going to the western side.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    It started with Fidel Castro and as he opposed the Americans ways, the Soviet Union put nuclear submarines in Cuba. The whole world was awaiting a nuclear war.
  • Vietnam War

    Through 1962 to 1975 America was in the Vietnam War since the Soviet Union was aiding the Viet Cong. America and the Soviet Union never confronted each other in the war.
  • Olympics

    Both the U.S. and the Soviets even competed in sports. America boycotted the Moscow olympics and the Soviets boycotted the Los Angeles olympics.
  • USSR gone

    The August Coup which was the house arrest of Gorbashev. Eventually the USSR realized its bankrupcy and the USSR collapsed.
