  • Winston Churchill Speech

    Winston Churchill Speech
    Churchill gave a speech describing an "iron curtain" that was descending on Europe. The "iron curtain" is a symbol for communism and the divide and struggle for power between government forms. This was a marker of the start of the tensions the cold war brought.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was put in place to try to stop the spread of communism by providing money as well as military support. This was apart of a Cold War policy called "containment" which is just trying to prevent the spread of communism.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Berlin Airlift is when the Soviet Union blocked the transportation of goods into West Berlin. The United States just shipped goods into Berlin on an airlift. This was one of the first actual acts of hostility towards the west in the beginning of the Cold War.
  • Formation of Nato/Warsaw

    Formation of Nato/Warsaw
    Nato is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which was created to counter the Soviet Union and consisted of the alliance. The Soviet Union then created the Warsaw Pact which was in opposition to Nato and consisted of communist countries.

    Soviet Union Atomic Bomb
    The Soviet Union created the first atomic bomb. This was a big deal because before hand, the U.S. thought they were in the lead for military technology. This also started the arms race.
  • United States Hydrogen Bomb

    United States Hydrogen Bomb
    The United States created their first hydrogen bomb. This was made in response to the Soviet Unions atomic bomb. This only further aggravated the race to who could create the most deadly military technology.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    This was an invasion on Cuba in attempt to start a riot and overthrow Castros government. It was funded by the United States government and lead by exiles. It failed.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis is when the Soviet Union installed Nuclear bombs with Soviet troops in Cuba. Since Cuba is very close to the United States, it seemed like a threat. The U.S. and the Soviet Union had a 13 day stalemate on the issue.

    Test Ban Treaty
    This was a treaty put in place between the United States and the Soviet Union that banned all testing of Nuclear Weapons. This was put in place as arms control.
  • INF Treaty

    INF Treaty
    The INF treaty is known as an agreement that ended the Cold War. It was a treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union that put limits and restrictions on the range of their missiles.
