    The Marshall Plan is announced
    An American initiative to aid Europe, the United States gave $13 billion in economic support to help rebuild European economies. The goals of the United States was to rebuild war-devastated regons.
  • Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia

    Communist takeover in Czechoslovakia
    Eduard Benes, the president of Czechoslovakia Communist Party was head of the London-based Czech goverment-in-exile during the war. American offcials were particularly upset when Benes' goverment strongly opposed any plans for the politcal rehabititation.
  • Russia tested its first atomic bomb

    Russia tested its first atomic bomb
    Code name "First Lightning" a successful remote test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan. The Soviet physicists who worked on the bombs were honored for the achievement on the penalties they would have suffered had the test failed.

    U.S President Harry S. Truman publicly announced his decision to support the development of the hydrogen bomb. A weapon theorized to be hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II.
