The U.S would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations.United States gave $17 billion in economic support to help rebuild European economies also known as the Marshall Plan. During this time the Unted Nations were created to aviod war. -

The possibility of further communist expansion lead to the US annd 11 other western nations to from NATO. NATOS main goal was to defend Western Europe against any Soviet threat. -
Korean War
As WW II ended the US and the soviet Union agreed on a temporary division of North Korea at the 38th parallel of latitude wich is also a demilitarized zone. The conflict started when the US backed a noncommunist government into South Korea while the Soviet Union supported a communist government in North Korea. . The landing at Inchon wich General Marcarthur lead turned North Korea forces back. We are currently still under an armistice. -
Sen. Joseph McCarthy
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of spying for Russia and this started the Red Scare. Senetor McCarthy lead congressional hearings on suspected communst spies. -
Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union created its own own military alliance, they were very powerful so it forced Warsaw Pact neighbors to follow its policies. The Warsaw Pact was the rival of NATO. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The world has never came so close to a full scale nuclear war. Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba during the missle crisis. Kenedy was the President of the US at the time of the missile crisis. Che Guevara met Fidel Castro in South America and convinced hm to restart the communist revolution in Cuba. -
Vietnam War Begins
Ho Chi Minh was the leader of Noeth Korean forces also known as te Vietcong. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution increased American involvement in Vietnam. Soldiers were chosen to serve in the US military through the draft. -
The Tet Offensive
The Vietcong launched a surprise attacks on cities throughtout South Vietnam . Guerrillas even stormed the American embassy in Saigon, this became known as th Tet Offensive. It is called Tet because it was during the Vietnamese New Years holiday. -
Salt Agreemant
Detente eased the Cold War by establishing more trade and other contacts between the superpowers. It also lead them to sign the SALT Agreement (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks). A treaty to limit the number of nuclear warheads and missiles. There was also a STALT II Treaty. -
Glasnost
The Russian term for speaking out openly. Gorbachev hoped that tis would lead citizens to find soulutions to bringing up economic and social problems. Ths was a break with the past, when any criticism of government policies had been quickly erased. -
Communism Collapses
USSR no longer existexd after the fall of communism. Ronald Reagan started the Star Wars program to bankrupt the Russian military.
