  • World War 2 Ends

    After millions of casualties and political chaos, World War 2 is finally coming to an end. The United States and The Soviet Union stand as the most powerful nations in the world at the time.
  • The Iron Curtain

    The Cold War was a conflict between communism and capatlist democracy. The U.S. and Soviet political and economic systems both differed. Former British leader Winston Churchill used the image of an iron curtain to describe the sharp division of Europe that was the result of Soviet actions
  • Cold War Begins

    The relationship between the Soviet Union and the Western nations continued to worsen after the war. Soon the United States and the Soviet Union entered an era of tension and hostility. Berlin was divided into communist East Berlin and the non-communist West Berlin.
  • The Korean War

    Soviet Union and U.S. agree to to temporarily divide the country in half. The Soviets quickly established a Communist government in the Northern half while the U.S. established a non communist government.The North Koreans attacked South Korea trying to unite the country under a Communist government
  • War in Southeast Asia

    After France lost control of the southeast asian country Vietnam.The country was divided into the Communist controlled North and an anti-communist regime ruled South. Each half was fighting to unite Vietnam under one government.
  • The Berlin Wall

    Thousands were crossing the border from East to West Berlin in search of work. Others just wanted to live in a free democratic nation. East Berlin built a tall barrier between the two halves of the city to prevent anyone from leaving or entering East Berlin. Anyone that attempted to cross it risked being shot by East German guards. The wall became a symbol of the brutality of the Communist system.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    A confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missles in Cuba. After a two-week standoff, Soviet leaders removed the missles when the United States agreed to remove U.S. missles from Turkey and promised not to attack Cuba.
  • Revolutions in Eastern Europe

    Revolution quickly spread across the region as citizens rose up and overthrew their Soviet-backed leaders. In almost all cases, these revolutions were peaceful. Gorbachev, no longer willing to keep Eastern Europe under control, did nothing to interfere.
  • Berlin Wall Falls

  • Cold War Ends

    The 1989 fall of the BErlin Wall and the colapse of Soviet backed regimes in Eastern Europe showed the dramatic crumbling of Soviet power. The Soviet Union fell apart.
