    Berlin Airlift

    The Soviet Union created a blockade that blocked all railroad, road, and water access into the section of Berlin that the US, Great Britain, and France controlled. The US and Great Britain sent in food, fuel, and other supplies to Berlin until it ended.

    Creation of NATO
    North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an alliance created by 12 different countries to help each other in self defence against the Soviet Union.

    Korean War

    This war began when North Korea invaded South Korea. The North had the support of China, and some assistance from the Soviet Union. The South was supported mainly by the US. The Korean War ended in Stalemate and both sides agreed to sign an armistice which stopped the fighting. To this day, the North and the South are still separated and are bitter enemies.

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Soviet Union makes an agreement with the other nations of central and eastern Europe that have a communist government. This agreement gives the Soviet Union the ability to move their military into these countries.

    Vietnam War

    This war was fought between the Northern and Southern Vietnamese governments. The pro-communist North had the support of the USSR and China, while the South was pro-democracy and supported by the US. Eventually both the US and China sent in troops to support their allies in the region. The war ended with America withdrawing all troops in the area. Then the Northern Vietnamese army captured the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon. This ended the Vietnam War with the communist North as the victors.

    The Soviet Union launches the first satellite into space. Many Americans thought that it was a missile to kill them.

    Construction of Berlin Wall
    This wall was built by the Soviet Union to keep the Western German population out of Berlin. It was primarily designed to cut off Western countries like the US and Britain from accessing Eastern Germany to deliver supplies.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Soviet Union established a ballistic missile base in Cuba. After negotiations, the US and USSR both agreed to back down to avoid war. This was the closest the two nations had come to a nuclear war.

    The United States sent their Apollo 11 Mission, containing Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to be the first men to land on the Moon. Neil and Buzz were the only two that actaully walked on the moon.

    Thousands of German protesters demanded that the border between East and West Berlin be removed. This eventually led to the German people tearing down the wall itself. Many tore down the wall so they could once again see their relatives and friends that were trapped on the other side.
