Cold War Timeline

  • Leaders (Mao Zedong)

    Mao was a Chinese communist who was the founder of the People's Republic of China. He wanted to develop a socialist revolution in the agricultural, pre-industrial society of the Republic of China and later the People's Republic of China.
  • Leaders (Fidel Castro)

    Fidel Castro was the leader of the Cuban Revolution and the Socialist state that followed it. Returning to Cuba, Castro took a key role in the Cuban Revolution by leading the Movement in a guerrilla war against Batista's forces from the Sierra Maestra.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was created for more peace during the Cold War. It supported the U.S and the USSR, it was established for the U.S to support a democratic nation. President Truman created this, he didn't want communism to keep on spreading around.
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall plan was a recovery program, it was a U.S program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II. It helped Europe regain peace and make their country better. They provided economic assistance and foreign aid.
  • The Berlin airlift

    During the Berlin Airlift, the U.S delivered more than 2.3 million of food, supplies, and fuel to West Berlin. This was to help create peace after all the war. President Franklin Roosevelt led this airlift.
  • NATO

    The NATO was created to secure peace in Europe. Many countries came together to form the NATO, also it was a treaty. This treaty was against the soviet union, they were not apart of it because their was a fearing the restoration of German militarism in West Germany.
  • Korean war (North Korean Invasion)

    The North Korean War was basically when North Korea invaded South Korea. The war began on June 25th, 1950; the North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel. North Korea aimed to military conquer South Korea. North and South Korea have been in a conflict for many years. Also, Stalin gave permission for North Korea to invade South Korea because Mao Zedong agreed to send reinforcements if needed.
  • Korean War (US/UN Coalition Forces Arrive)

    During the war, the UN intervened by sending armed forces to help out. Also, the soviet union boycotted the Security Council. President Truman also thought the Americans were going to get involved so that was another reason they sent troops to Korea.
  • Leaders (Krustchev)

    Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He sponsored the early Soviet space program, and enactment of moderate reforms in domestic policy.
  • Warsaw Pact

    It was a treaty to try and become friends with everyone. It was also a political and military alliance established on May 14, 1955 between the Soviet Union and several Eastern European countries. Albania ,Bulgaria ,Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary ,Poland, Romania and the USSR all came together to create this.
  • Brinkmanship

    brinkmanship is an approach in which a country pushes a situation extremely close to a dangerous point. Brinkmanship was an effective tactic during the Cold War because neither side of the conflict could contemplate mutual assured destruction in a nuclear war
  • Sputnik Launch

    The Sputnik was launched to serve to intensify the arms race and raise Cold War tensions. The USSR wanted to prove that they were better in technology so they launched it to show everyone that their better. It was the first artificial satellite to orbit earth.
  • M.A.D

    M.A.D means it deters any country from using nuclear weapons. If one side uses weapons, it will destroy both sides. Their would be a line of nuclear weapons and then it would attack the attacker and the defender.
  • Non-Aligned Movement

    This was created to create an independent path in world politics that would not result in member States becoming pawns in the struggles between the major powers.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    It was a little war between the U.S and the Soviet Union, the agreement was that if the U.S promised not to invade the missiles would be stopped. Their were missiles all around the world going back and fourth, many people lost their homes and loved ones.
  • Chernobyl

    It was a nuclear accident that happend because Unit 4 shut down the reactors power-regulating system and once that happend it shut down almost every unit. The place still stays on the radioactive site.
  • Commonwealth of Independent States

    The Commonwealth of Independent States is a regional intergovernmental organization focused on cooperation on political, economic, environmental, humanitarian, cultural and other issues between a number of former Soviet Republics. Many presidents came together to form this.
