    Nuremberg Trials

    Over 200 trials took place during the Nuremberg trials. Dozens of Nazis and military officials were sentenced to death for their crimes in the Holocaust. Although the Nazi were punished the public was controversial about the trials. These war criminals were charged with crimes against humanity, experimenting on prisoners of war, slave labor, and plundering occupied countries. These charges were few of many military officials were given.

    Before the War, "The Iron Curtain"
    Stalin said in a speech a war is inevitably going to happen between the east and west. Winston Churchill stated an iron curtian was falling on europe as they saw the Soviets as a threat to peace.

    How this was started was after WWII the relationship and the western nations continued to worsen eventually leading to conflict. The military rivalry between The Soviet Union and U.S.A was dangerous, they had different governments and ways of life. This was about capitalism and communism.

  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The western leaders began planning got make Germany an independent democratic and capitalist nation, and the Soviets knew they couldn't let this happen. The Soviets didn't want to spread capitalism any more than there already was. So they blocked off all the land, rail, and water routes in West Berlin. The allies wouldn't leave so they made the Berlin Airlift. Every 30 seconds a plane would leave at one point, this blockade wouldn't end until 1949.

    When the West heard about the successful nuclear bomb test they were worried about since they lost their military advantage against them. The United States had to find another advantage against the Soviet Union so the test began until the Hydrogen Bomb. it was a much larges blast then atomic bomb since they had discovered nuclear fission. Less then a year later the Soviets tested their own hydrogen bomb, it was clear that any attack would lead into terrible destruction.

    NATO was formed to prevent any action of the Soviet Union in Europe.Most of the western European countries joined the military alliance.

    After WWII the allies split the Korea into two, North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was a communist nation that wanted to spread into South Korea, which was controlled by the United States. South Korea held a non-communist regime that would prevent North Korea from spreading.When North Korea attacked planning to merge the two states the UN decided that once they had South Korea the Soviet Union would find another expansion so the allies supported South Korea's effort.

    The communist nations also made an alliance to counter NATO. These new alliances would be one of the main things in the Cold war.

    Once the soviet Union launched the artificial satellite "Sputnik". The United States thought the Soviets jumped ahead of them with this. The US made NASA this program eventually took men to the moon. The public in America saw the Soviet bomb threats as a growing threats and made bomb shelter and started to do drills in schools.

    Once the UN would start reinforcing the South Korean army quickly the war turned on the South Korean side. The UN forces almost completely conquered until the communist China join North Korea's effort. Once China joined the war turned into a dangerous deadlock. After three years of fighting and over 4 million casualties the Korean war was over with little change after. North Korea remained a communist nation and South Korea was still an ally of the USA.

    Another crisis in Berlin was the Berlin wall, most people were crossing leaving to be free and the other half was looking for work. anyone who wanted to cross was at risk of being shot by the east Berlin wall guards. The wall came to symbolize communism with its brutality. Closer to the United States in Cuba the government was being over thrown with a communism system. The US government thought Cuba was to close only 90 miles off of Florida, so they began a plan to over throw the government.

    The US government made a plan called "Bay of Pigs Invasion" in April 1961 this attack was implemented. The US thought this attack would start a uprising in the people but the attackers were quickly defeated. Though the attack wasn't successful the Soviets had a plan to implement missiles in Cuba. After a two week stand off the Soviets and Americans came to a comprise to take out the missiles in Cuba and Turkey.

    This treaty was part of early arms control that the United States and Soviet Union implemented. This outlawed the nuclear testing in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater.

    Once Richard Nixon was elected as president he wanted to break the tension of the two super powers. He started negotiation called Strategic Arms Limitation Talks also known as SALT. These talks led to limiting the amount of nuclear warheads each countries could own. The ABM (Anti-ballistic missile) treaty would also come from these important talks, this didn't let either of the countries make nuclear missile defense. Once SALT II happened there also was talks of arms control treaties.

    In Africa the European colonies were ending with many power struggles, for instance Belgium ended its control over Congo Joseph Mobutu took control. All of the western counties supported his leadership and thought he would be a good ally. The African country Angola won independence but civil war followed for years on end. America and the Soviets supported them until 1991.

    The 1980's
    Once Ronald Reagan became president, he was aggressive against the Soviets threatening the ABM treaty with a missile defense. Soon after the two countries made another treaty called INF (Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces). After many years of conflict things were getting better between the two countries.
