    Quebec's Padlock Law
    An act in Quebec, by the Union Nationale government, was intended to prevent the dissemination of communist propaganda. The plan of the Soviet Union was to spread communism all over the world, and this act was to prevent that and promote democracy.

    Spies in Canada: Gouzenko Affair
    Igor GouzenkoIgor Gouzenko, born in the Soviet Union, was trained in intelligence, and was assigned to the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. He learned that there were spies in Canada. Before being sent back to the Soviet Union of offered the Canadian gov. documents exposing Soviet spies. Documents exposed 18 Soviet spies who were later convicted of spying. He then went into hiding.

    An attempt to physically block all supply lines toward West Berlin. Allies organized an airlift to provide essentials to the people in West Berlin

    NATONATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. To defend other members of treaty from enemy attacks. Members were: Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and USA. Defence intended to protect against Soviet aggression.

    Korean WarNorth Korea, who was supported by China, attacked South Korea, who was supported by the USA. The Security Council of the UN called members to help South Korea. Canada sent 25,000 troops, 1000 were wounded, 406 killed. Canadian troops stayed until 1955 to maintain the truce between both sides.

    Warsaw PactSoviet union organized countries behind the iron curtain into a military alliance. Members were: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Soviet Union. It created an arms race between the two sides of the iron curtain, both sides had an hydrogen bomb.

    Suez CrisisThe State of Israel was just created, but Arabs did not support the idea. USA and Britain supported Israel, while Russia supported the Arabs. The Suez canal was an important waterway as it connected the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Making this waterway important to both Israel and Egypt. Thsis created a war between the two sides, and the UN had to step in.

    Draft DodgersWas a war fought by North Vietnam, supported by China and communist countries, and South Vietnam, supported by USA and anti-communist allies. As Canada was not a part of the war, Americans moved to Canada for the sole purpose of devading conscription. 20,000 to 30,000 draft eligable men moved to Canada to dodge the war.

    Lester B Pearson was awarded the nobel peace prize for his efforts in the Suez Crisis. He came up with the idea of the peacekeeping, and was appropiatly awarded for this.

    NORAD: North American Air Defence. Was the defence against nuclear bombs. Canada aloud the Distant early Warning system (DEW) to be created. The DEW line was radar in the NorthWest territories, to locate missiles coming from Russia. The NORAD headquarters are under 400m of of solid granite.

    SputnikThe Soviets launched the first Sputnik satellite. There was a fear in Noth America that the Sputnik to deliever nuclear war to anywhere in North America. USA created there ownlong range missiles, Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM). The Soviets made their own.

    Prime Minister Diefenbaker chose to use Bomarc missiles from USA instead of the Avro Arrow. Then the Canadian governemnt disaloud nuclear warheads in Canada, but when Pearson came to office he used them again.

    The Avro Arrow was a supersonic, interceptor, jet aircraft developed and was built by Canadians. Instead of the Avro Arrow Prime Minister Diefenbaker ordered ready made American Bomarc Missiles. The cancellation of the Avro Arrow cost Canadians 14,000 jobs.

    Cuban Missile CrisisUS President Kennedy setup a naval blockade around the island to stop Soviet ships. American schoolchildren practised drills in case of attack. Canadian government suggested instead of a blockade, they are examined. The blockade remained.

    Summit SeriesA hockey series held beween the favorites, Canada, and the top Russian team. Canada was expected to win because they had NHL players on their team. The series turned into an upset fast, as the USSR proved they were just as good, maybe better. In game 8 with the series tied 3-3 after a tie in game 3, Paul Henderson scored the game winning goal with little time to spare. Became Canada's most famous hockey goal.

    There were signs that Communism was failing in East Germany. With Communism failing in other parts of Europe, East Germany leader opened the border crossings, and people fled to West Germany. Then The wall would be chipped away with hammers and chiesels, until Germany became one country.

    On this day the Soviet Union leader had resigned and gave the nuclear codes to Russia President. The Soviet Union office was now extinct. Russia began creating new states for the past year, and became clear the Soviet Union was falling.
