  • Arab Oil Embargo

This exacerbated the global recession and heightened tensions between the US and its allies, who accused the US of inciting an embargo by assisting Israel. It had an impact on American culture since oil prices per barrel have grown dramatically, putting soaring expenses on consumers and posing structural difficulties to national economies' stability.

    The Cold War's End

  • Camp David Accords

Although the Soviet Union was not directly involved, US President Jimmy Carter played a key role in making this agreement possible. The goal of this treaty was to bring peace to the Middle East. Because the US was involved in a covert presidential retreat in Maryland, foreign policy was changed (Between Israel and Egypt). The negotiations were long and contentious, lasting 13 days. Throughout the negotiations, President Carter played a vital role in keeping both sides talking.
  • Dentente

It had no effect on existing tensions. Instead, it helped to de-escalate tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. Because the decade saw growing trade and cooperation with the Soviet Union, as well as the ratification of the SALT treaties, it had an impact on domestic policy.
  • SALT II

The SALT II Treaty essentially created numerical equivalence between the two countries. Because nuclear weapons rivalry was lessened, this served to alleviate tensions between the US and the Soviet Union. It had an impact on foreign policy because the treaty called for both sides to have an equal number of strategic nuclear delivery vehicles, to start the process of reducing these delivery vehicles, and to put limits on qualitative developments that could jeopardize future stability.
  • Iran Hostage Crisis

The US government and the Iranian administration were in talks to end the Iranian hostage issue. On this day, the 52 American hostages held in the US Embassy in Tehran were released. It had an impact on US economic sanctions against Iran, further eroding relations between the two countries. The crisis weakened foreign relations and provided an opportunity for the Soviet Union to promote its agenda.
  • Regan's Star Wars Initiative

Because the program was meant to shoot down nuclear missiles in space, the Soviets were no longer able to attack the US with their missiles, causing heightened tension between the US and the Soviet Union. Many Americans, I believe, were relieved by this, as they no longer had to worry about being attacked by Soviet bombs and missiles.
  • Iran-Contra Affair

This was a covert operation in which the US government discreetly delivered weaponry to a known adversary while also providing financial assistance to a rebel army. This heightened tensions because the US had taken an illegal step. Because the US was illegally assisting allies, this had an impact on foreign policy. Iran, for example, was in severe need of weaponry and spare parts for its existing weapons. When the story initially broke, the United States was humiliated by this affair.
  • Gorbachev Ronald Reagan

Because President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Mikhail Gorbachev signed an arms control deal prohibiting the employment of intermediate-range nuclear missiles, tensions in the Cold War were reduced. Regan approved domestic discretionary budget cuts, tax cuts, and military budget increases, all of which contributed to an overall increase in government debt.
  • The Reykjavik Summit of 1986

It eased tensions since the Soviet Union offered eliminating half of all strategic armaments and agreed not to count British or French armaments. It clarified the distinction between nuclear and conventional weapons, as well as the determination that any country's use of nuclear weapons was unacceptable. Despite the fact that this plan failed, it did result in the signing of a US-Soviet pact prohibiting intermediate-range nuclear weapons and a draft treaty restricting strategic nuclear weapons.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

The United States had no involvement in the construction of the Berlin Wall. Many individuals were relieved by the fall of the Berlin Wall because it allowed them to reunite with Western Europe. During the Cold War, they were Soviet Union vassal states. Although the United States was not participating in the event, it did serve as a symbol of the country's unification as well as the end of communism in Eastern Europe and the Cold War.
  • Final Collapse of Soviet Union

The fall of the Soviet Union has hampered communism's growth and sparked new regional conflicts. In terms of economics, the United States intervened and promoted broad-based market-oriented changes in former communist countries. When the Soviet Union fell apart, the United States was the only global superpower left.
