    The Soviet Union ended when president Mikhail Gorbachev resigned from his leader position, and handed over his power to Boris Yeltsin, a Russian president. Previously to that, most of the individual republics of the Soviet Union, including Russia signed the Alma-Ata Protocol, declaring the end of the Soviet Union.     NATO expansion and Rising Tensions
    Ukraine joined NATO in February 1994. Russian opposed them joining, and Vladimir Putin threatens to target Ukraine with missiles. The debate was part of a larger debate over Ukraine’s ties to the European Union and Russia. European Union: a common economic system to facilitate trade and movement between countries within Europe. NATO: a defense alliance to resolve international conflicts peacefully, and prevent another world war.

    Russia launched an air, land, and sea attack on Georgia. The Russians invaded most Georgian villages and ethnically cleansed the Georgians. This was the first war to have an information war happen at the same time as the military conflict.

    Russian Annexation of Crimea
    Russia, under the control of Putin, annexes Crimea, and seizes control of the government. Ukrainian armed forces are evicted from Crimea, and Crimea is made a part of the Russian Federation. Vladimir Putin: becomes the leader of Crimea after it’s annexation in 2014. Crimea then became the Republic of Crimea, and was part of the Russian Federation.
