    Berlin Wall
    On June 24, 1948, the USSR(or Soviet Union) set up the Berlin Wall. They blocked entry from any other countries, and prevented exiting the Soviet Union. This also prevented US citizens from coming back home.

    The Soviet Union, in May 1949, took down its reinforcements, and the wall was 'taken down'. US citizens were finally allowed home. The wall still stands to this day.

    The Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed during the Cold War, and was signed April 4, 1949. The main countries that signed this Treaty were the United States, France, and United Kingdom. The current base is in Brussels, Belgium.

    On June 25, 1950, the Korean began when the North Koreans invaded the South. Russia was affiliated with the North Koreans, wanting them to be Communist. On the other side, the United States backed the south, which wanted to remain democratic.

    On March 5, Stalin died at the age of 74. Stalin didn't just go out without new power, however. The new leader of the Soviet Union would be Nikita Khrushchev.

    The race started in 1955 with the US releasing plans about a satellite to orbit Earth. The Soviet Union wanted these plans and began to design their own satellite. The peak of the Space race was the landing on the moon.

    On October 4, 1957, Sputnik, a Russian satellite was released into the Earth's orbit. This set the pressure high for the US to try and make their own. This later pushed the US to land on the moon first.

    On May 1, 1960, Francis Gary Powers took out from a US air base, to spy on the Soviet Union. He was in a U-2, one of the most advanced stealth jets made in the US. It was shot down by the Soviets, and he was captured.

    On October 16, the United States discovered a massive setup of nuclear missiles in Cuba, aiming at the country. For 12 days, the United States and Russia, along with the rest of the world, were at a stand still. At any moment, if one fired, the world would end.

    John F. Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested, but he himself was killed by another man. Many officials believe he wasn't the only killer.

    On July 1965, the Vietnam war was given 150,000 troops. This war was a devastating and an embarrassing loss to the United States. Eventually, the country was entirely taken over by communism.

    On December 21, 1968, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. He was the first man to ever walk on the satellite. He was also the first citizen of the United States on the moon.

    SALT
    On May 26, 1972, SALT(Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) was signed by the United States and the USSR. This prevented the constant build up of nuclear weapons. This treaty came in two parts; SALT 1 and SALT 2

    This pact finally ended July 1, 1991. This pact stated that all communist countries must ally together. When this ended, the slow start of the end of the Soviet Union began.
