  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    The Yalta Conference was a meeting between the three big leaders and countries. The meeting consisted of Winston Churchill (Britain), Joseph Stalin (Russia) and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The meeting was held to demand the Nazis/Germany's surrender and begin plans for post war. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of Political because it was between three influential and political figures and were discussing political problems. The Yalta Conference fueled and started the Cold War
  • Spread of Communism

    Spread of Communism
    The United States of America were unable to completely contain communism. Communism spread to Korea and Vietnam where the US fought to stop the spread of communism. They were able to keep the communists back a little which then created North Vietnam/South Vietnam and North Korea/South Korea. This links to the GASPIRE theme of Geographic because the two countries were split into both democratic and communist. This affected the cold war because some Asian countries became communist.

    The Creation Of "The Iron Curtain"
    "Iron Curtain" is a term used to describe the boundary that separated the Warsaw Pact countries from the NATO countries from about 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. To the east of the Iron Curtain were the countries that were connected to or influenced by the former Soviet Union. This included part of Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania. This is a geographical theme because it a boundary between two countries. Provided a boundary during the cold war.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was an attempt by the United States of America to contain communism. This means to limit communism to where it already exists, keep communism from spreading to other countries. It was created by President Harry S. Truman on March 12th 1947 when he wanted to stop communism from spreading to Greece and Turkey. This connects to the Geographical theme in GASPIRE. The Americans are trying to contain communist spread to certain geographical locations.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall plan was a plan to aid Europe, in which the United States of America gave approximately $13 billion in economic support to help Europe recover after World War II. Used the money also to convince Europe not to turn communist. This links to the GASPIRE theme of economic because a large sum of money was transferred to the Europeans from the Americans. This affected the cold war because it prevented many European countries from turning communist.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    At the end of World War II: the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union all occupied Germany and split it into three parts. Berlin was separated by a blockade, this forced the U.S, Britain to send 1.5 million tons of supplies like food and weapons to the residents of West Berlin. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of Geographic because planes had to deliver to a specific geographic location. This affected the cold war because it helped West Berlin survive.
  • Comecon

    Comecon
    A council for Mutual Economic Assistance founded in 1949 by the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin. This was Eastern Europe's or the Soviets response to the Marshall Plan inflicted by the United States of America. Comecon was created to give money to Europe and change their view. This connects to the Gaspire theme of Economic because it is Eastern Europe giving Western Europe money to try and convince them to become communist.
  • NATO

    NATO
    NATO stands for "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" and was formed by the United States of America in 1949. The NATO consisted of USA, Canada, United Kingdom, France and eight other western countries. It's a military alliance and a pledge to support one another if attacked. This connects to the political theme of GASPIRE because it is the western nations together in an alliance. This affected the cold war because it made a large strong western force. Opposite of Warsaw Pact.
  • Arms Race

    Arms Race
    A competition between two forces to see who can have the best armed forces. Each country competes to create a mass amount of weapons, stronger armies and superior military technology. Links to the GASPIRE theme of Economic because it took a lot of each countries money and resources to try and win the arms race. This affected the cold war between America and the Soviet Union because they both fought to see who could create the strongest nuclear weapons.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    Started when the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel in 1950 and wanted to unite the whole of Korea and create a communist country. The United Nations which were led by the US came to the aid of the South Koreans to stop the spread of communism. Communist China and the USSR both gave North Korea military support and weapons. NATO forces won the war which ended in 1953 splitting Korea in half. Geographic theme because Korea was spit in two.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was a Soviet Union led military alliance somewhat like the NATO alliance, but consisted of eastern nations instead of western nations. The Warsaw Pact consisted of Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Soviet Union which were all communist countries. This connects to the GASPIRE theme of political because it is the alliance of multiple countries. This affected the cold war because it created an alliance against western forces.
  • The Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War
    The cold war was a fight between the United States and the USSR over the world's resources. South Vietnam was an allie of the US and North Vietnam was an allie of the USSR. The US feared if North Vietnam won the war other countries in South Asia would also fall to Communism. This is a theme of Geographic because it was a fight over geographic space.
  • Fidel Castro Overthrows

    Fidel Castro Overthrows
    Cuban leader Fidel Castro (1926-) established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere after leading an overthrow of the military dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. He ruled over Cuba for nearly five decades, until handing off power to his younger brother Raúl in 2008. Social aspect of GASPIRE, changed the cold war because he made Cuba communist.
  • Russian Ukranian War

    Russian Ukranian War
    War has been going on a while, Russia wanting to take over the land of the Ukranians. Wanted to spread communism and are still trying to take over Ukraine present day. Geographic GASPIRE, fighting over land.
