President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948 which became known as he Marshall Plan. It was proposed that the US would provide economic assistance to postwar Europe. It was formally called the European Recovery Program. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
From June 24, 1948- May 12, 1949. The Berlin Blockade was one of the first major international crisis of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked the Western allies railway, road, and canal access. The US and UK responded by airlifting food a fuel to Berlin. -

Ranged from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975. It was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Was officially fought between North and South Vietnam. The US had an 8 year involvement in the war. -
Hungarian Uprising
Ranged from October 23, 1956 to November 11, 1956. It was a spontaneous national uprising. It occurred 12 days before Hungary was crushed by the Soviet Union. Thousands were killed. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Ranged from April 17, 1961 to April 20, 1961. It was a failed landing operation on the southwestern coast of Cuba. It was by Cuban exiles who opposed Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution. -

The wall was built to keep people from going from East to West Berlin. Nikita Khrushchev ordered the wall to be built. The wall was left up for 30 years. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Ranged from October 16, 1962 to October 28, 1962. The world was seemingly on the brink of nuclear war. Both the US and the Soviet Union had powerful weapons that could have wiped out the whole world. Khrushchev ended up dismantling his missiles. -
Prague Spring
Ranged from January 5, 1968 to August 21, 1968. Was a period of political liberalization. Was a mass protest in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. It was an attempt to provide additional rights to citizens. -
Soviet War in Afghanistan
Ranged from December 24, 1979 to February 15, 1989. Soviet- Afghan war where insurgent groups fought a nine year war. This war was fought against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Soviet Army. -
Solidarity Movement in Poland
Solidarity emerged on August 31, 1980. The Communist government of Poland signed an agreement allowing the Gdansk Shipyard to exist. This movement created the first independent labor union in a Soviet-bloc Country. -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
This was a series of protests and demonstrations. University students in China wanted political and economic reform. Tens of thousands of students gathered for the protests. Many were arrested and other were executed. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
Gorbachev brought down the Berlin wall. The pressure of the people was a key role in the destruction of the wall. Crowds of Germans dismantled the wall after it stood for 30 years. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
Gorbachev resigned his post as President of the Soviet Union. Yeltsin was the new president of the newly independent Russian State. It fell due to the large number of radical reforms. -
9/11 Attacks
Terrorists hijacked four planes. Two went into the Twin Towers. One went into the Pentagon. One crashed into a field in PA. These attacks resulted in thousands of deaths. This was an event that would change America forever and will never be forgotten.
