    The Marshall Plan was an attempt to prevent the spread of communism. It provided assistance and money to European countries whose mainland was destroyed by war. The United Nations was formed near the end of the World War II. Its purpose was to prevent future wars. It was constructed of 50 countries when it first started and has 5 permanent members today on its security council: China, France, the United Kingdom, Russian Federation, and the United States.

    The Truman Doctrine was a U.S. pledge to resist the spread of communism worldwide. It said the U.S. would provide political, economical and military assistance to any country under threat of communism. The Red Scare was the 2nd Scare in the United States. The U.S. caught a couple who were communist spies, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. Also they found Alger Hiss guilty of spying for the U.S.S.R.

    McCarthyism is when Joseph McCarthy made unsupported accusations on suspected communists. He could never get the amount of names he accused in the State Department, once he said he accused 57, 81, and 205. NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They had 12 members. This was also the U.S.' first military alliance with other nations during peacetime. They did this because the Cold War ended any hope of the U.S. returning to be an isolationist.

    Dwight Eisenhower was president during the Korea War. The Korean War was between the communist North Korea and democratic South Korea with support from the United States. The Korean War ended in a stalemate with borders at the 38th parallel, where it is still divided today.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis is when the USSR put missiles in Cuba directed towards the US. This upset the US and the USSR and the US came to an agreement that they would remove their missiles in Cuba and the US would remove their missiles in Turkey. Bay of pig invasion is when the US trained Cuban refugees to try to overthrow the communist Cuban government, led by Fidel Castro. This was led by JFK and it was a failure.

    John F. Kennedy's assassination was devistating to the public because he was killed in a parade and it was televised. But the American citizens felt they were brought together because his funeral was public and televised. This was the second successful assassination of a US president, the first being Abraham Lincoln.

    JFK was president for the start of the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War extended through many presidencies and was unsupported by the public. Vietnam was divided into communist North Vietnam and democratic South Vietnam. It was divided at the 17th parallel. LBJ increased the amount of troops in Vietnam. Nixon was known for Vietnamination that was the slow removal of troops. War ended when he was in office. It resulted in the collapse of South Vietnam, which united to form one communist Vietnam

    Ronald Reagan demanded that the Soviet Union tear down the Berlin Wall. He referred to the Soviet Union as the "evil empire". The collapse of the Soviet Union occurred as a result of the recognition of nearby countries as independent. Mikhail Gorbachev was the 8th and final leader of the Soviet Union and he used techniques such as glasnost.

    George H.W. Bush was president for the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, when the Berlin Wall came down. The Berlin Wall was put up after WW2 to stop the Eastern Europeans from leaving East Berlin, occupied by The Soviets, and going to West Berlin, occupied by the US, GB, and France. The Persian Gulf War was when Iraq invaded Kuwait for oil. Operation Desert Storm was an assault on Iraq to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi control by the United States. It ended in a successful ceasefire in 1991.

    North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which opens the U.S., Canada, and Mexico up to free trade. This led to the transfer of many American jobs to Mexico where labor costs are lower. Clinton also launched an air strike Serbs who were participating in ethnic cleansing.

    George W. Bush was president during the terrorist attacks on the twin towers in New York on 9/11. There were 5 planes that were hijacked and redirected with hostages. He was also president during the wars with Afghanistan and Iraq. The Afghanistan war was fought in Afghanistan with the US and NATO. The Iraq war had a result of overthrowing the Iraq government.
