    The Economic Recovery Act of 1948, signed by President Truman, became known as the Marshall Plan. The intention of this plan was to restore the economy of postwar Europe. The goal of this plan was to create a stable environement for democratic government to thrive.

    Soviet leader Joseph Stalin imposed a blockade which cut off land and river transit to West Berlin and West Germany. The Western powers initiated an airlift to send aid to West Berlin.This airlift lasted almost a year and provided relief to Western Germany.

    The Peopleś Republic of China was declared by Mao Zedong. This ended the civil war. This also completed the Chinese Revolution of 1911.

    The war broke out when 75,000 North KOrean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel. This is the border between the Soviets in North Korea and the Western Republic in South Korea. This was the first military action of the Cold War.

    The Cuban Revolution was an armed uprising of Cuba. This overthrew the government of Fulgencio Batista. Fidel Castro, who lead the revolution, became the leader of Cuba for 49 years.

    Eisenhower overthrew the Guatamalen president, Jacobo Arbenz. He justified this because of the communist threat the country posed on the US. Arbenz was deposed to protect the profits of the american fruit company.

    The Eastern Bloc is made up of communist countries in Eastern Europe.This was created by the Soviet Union by invading and annexing European countries. These countries were involved with the Soviet Union and the Warsaw pact.

    The Vietnam War was fought between NOrth Vietnam and South Vietnam. This was intensified by the ongoing Cold War. Communist forces seized control of South Vietnam and unified the country.

    Hungarian Uprising
    People in Hungary protested their lack of rights, and political freedoms. They also rioted over food and fuel shortages. This led to the Red Army putting down the force resulting in thousands of Hungarians fleeing to the West.

    This was an invasion of Cuba by the US government. Three US airplanes piloted by Cubans bonbed Cuban airbases and those US trained CUbans landed in the Bay of Pigs. However, this force was inferior Castroś troops and the last stronghold was cpatured within two days.

    A wall of concrete and barbed wire was built to separate Eat and West Berlin. This was built to prevent fascists from undermining the Socialist state of East Germany. The wall stood until 1989 when the East German Communist Party announced that people could cross.

    The Soviet Union planted nuclear-armed missiles only 90 miles from the coast of the US.The US and Soviet Union had a 13 day stand off over this. The US naval blockade lead to the removal of Soviet missiles and Cuba and US missile in Turkey.

    The Soviets fought a 9 year guerilla war against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. This conflict was related to the Cold War era and was a contributing factor to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. About 10% of Afghanistan´s population was lost in the conflict.

    Solidarity was a broad social movement in the 1980s. Methods of civil resistance were used to improve workerś rights and social change. The Polish government attempted to destroy the union through martial law and political repression failed.

    The Tiananmen Square Protests were student-led, this was also known as the June 4th Incident. This became the focus for large scale protests which were ignored by Chinaś Communist Leaders. The protests ended on June 4th when the government declared martial law.

    Shortlt after half a million people protested in East Germany, the wall dividing East and West Germany came to an end. The intention was to loosen the borders, making travel easier for Eatern Germans. However, the border was completely opened up.

    Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president and left his post to Boris Yeltsin to rule over the newly independent state of Russia. The fall of the Soviet Union was a result of internal disintegration. The poor economy and leadership caused its unstable state.

    9/11 Attacks
    The Islamis extremist group, al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes to attack targets in the United States. Two planes struck the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Roughly 3,000 people were killed and this tragedy led to increased combat against terrorism and security in airports.
