  • Potsdam Conference

    Potsdam Conference
    Allied leaders gather outside of Berlin to demand the surrender of Japan and set up a framework for postwar Europe. Each leader was trying to get the strongest position and the most influence for his own country, but the countries fell into two camps. The Potsdam Conference set up a competition between capitalist Western powers (the United States and Great Britain) and the communist-controlled Soviet Union. This rivalry grew into the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    June 1950 to July 1953 there was a war between North Korea and South Korea, United States and China were also involved in this war. United states aid South Korea while China help North Korea. It was the first major battle over communism and United States and others feared that communism would spread so they fought. The War began during June 25, 1950 when the North Koreans attacked southward across the 38th parallel.

    From November 1, 1954 to April 30, 1975 Vietnam engage in a War between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The United States help South Vietnam during the War. North Vietnam and South Vietnam fought because North Vietnam wanted south vietnam to reunite the country under communism but South Vietnam didn’t want that. Sadly South Vietnam loss when United States cut back on its military in 1974 so a year later in 1975 Vietnam reunited again under communism.

    NATO/Warsaw Pact
    May 14, 1955 NATO ( North Atlantic treaty organization) and the Warsaw pact sign a treaty. They sign the treaty because they wanted to establish a strong defense alliances against any potential military or economic treats from the east. This led to a revival of nationalism and expressions of hostility towards the Soviet Union.

    On July 26, 1956 was a crisis in the middle east when Egyptian president, Gamal abdel Nasser, nationalized the Suez canal. They declare that they have a martial law in the canal zone and seize control of the suez canal company because the Americans and British decided not to finance Egypt’s construction as they promised. So they took over the canal to pay for their construction. This led to Britain and France secretly preparing military action to regain control of the canal.

    On october 4, 1957 was the first launch of a successful Satellite from the Soviet Union. The successful launch of the first artificial satellite was feared by United States. United States thought that they would be the first people to successfully launch a satellite but they didn’t. The soviet Union also tested the first intercontinental ballistic missile that year, this also made United state concern about the technology in the Soviet union.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    October 1962 United States and Soviet Union engage in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff, the United states and the Soviet Union did this 13-day standoff because of the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba. This was a threat to United States because the installation of the missiles was install 90 miles South of Florida so the missiles were capable of reaching areas east of united States. Cuba and United States made a treaty to stop Cuba from firing the missile.

    n 1980 a new leader was elect in the Soviet Union and his name was Mikhail Gorbachev. He changed the soviet Union hugely and in many way like economically and politically. He introduce a program that aim at restructuring the Soviet economy because they new leader was open minded which enlarge the freedom of expression in the country for many individual.
