  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan supplied over $13 billion to help Europe recover its economy. It successfully accomplished its objective of "restoring the confidence of the European people in the economic future of their own countries and of Europe as a whole". The plan is named after George C. Marshall, who came up with it. The Marshall Plan was in charge of rebuilding Europe after World War II. It was effective for some time, until the Cold War started.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union occupied the part of Germany that Berlin was located in. The Soviet Union blockaded all acccess to Berlin, leaving many people without necessary supplies. The U.S. and United Kingdom started flying planes into Berlin dropping off supplies to save the people that were stuck in Berlin. The Berlin Airlift is signifcant to the Cold War because the Soviet Union had such a harsh control on Berlin, which lead to the first Berlin crisis of the Cold War.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    NATO was established by the U.S., Great Britian, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Portugal. Greece, Turkey, and West Germany later joined, while France dropped out in 1966. NATO was created so the members could have allies. 3 years after the end of the Cold WAr, NATO participated in its first military action as part of an international effort to end fighting in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic

    Bay of Pigs
    Bay of Pigs InvasionFidel Castro invaded Havana and overthrew the president, General Fulgencio Batista. The U.S. State Department and the CIA attempted to overtrhow Castro for the next two years. The CIA launched a full-scale invasion of Cuba in April 1961. The invasion was by 1,400 American-trained Cubans who had fled their homes when Castro took over. However, it didn't go well. The American-trained Cubans were badly outnumbered by Castro's troops and surrendered after less than 24 hours of fighting.

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was what sparked the Cuban Missile Crisis. When Russia tried to use Cuba as a place for them to house nuclear missiles close toe the United States. One of the negotations the United States had to make to get Russia to remove the nuclear misslies was to promise not to invade Cuba again.

    In his special message to Congress, President Kennedy asked for an increase in funds to send a man to the moon, to increase unmanned space exploration, to develop nuclear rocket, and to advance satellite technology. Kennedy wanted to send a man to the moon to beat the Soviet Union to it. Sending a man to the moon becaome a race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, in which the Soviet Union won.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was significant to the Cold War because it put a lot of tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. When Castro became the leader of Cuba, he allied with the Soviet Union. The U.S. felt threatened when the Soviet Union put missles so close to the United States. A war almost started when the Soviets refused to remove the missile after the U.S. asked them to.

The standoff was over the placement of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles in Cuba. These missile were placed only 90 miles from the U.S. On October 22, President Kennedy told Americans about the missiles and what he was going to do to address the problem . Kennedy was going to put a naval blockade up around Cuba and threaten that the U.S. was going tp use military force if needed.

The Soviets ended up winning after some mistakes were made with the refereeing. This event is significant to the Cold War because the U.S and Soviet Union have been rivals for a very long time. Everything they did was a competition.
