    President Truman creates the Truman Doctrine that states the United States will provide political, military and economic support to countries that are fighting against communist country.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was the offical European Recovery Program (ERP). The U.S. gave European counrties aid in order to rebuild their economy after the war. This was a prevention plan in order to stop communism to reach Western Europe. It also remove trade barriers and help modernize industries.

    Russina did not like the idea of West Germany. Russia decided to block all trade routes. This cause West Germany to stop receiving anytime of goods. The US and UK had to intervene and give food to West Germany everyday via helicoptor. This became known as the Berlin Airlift.

    THe North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed with Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This was formed to protect and keep the peace in these countries. One major agreement that NATO has is that if a counrty attacks any of these countries, you attack all. This basically means that is Russia decides to attack the US, these countries will defend the US.

    North Korea invaded South Korea. North Korea was a communist country. The US got involved and defended South Korea because they did not want to see a communist win and was afraid that communism was going to spread. Russia supplies materials to North Korea. China also helps defend North Korea

    One of the U.S. spy plane saw some unusual construction from the USSR on nuclear missile base in Cuba. This was the closest U.S and Russia came to in having a nuclear war. U.S, Russia and Cuba all were prepare to enter war. To prevent a devastating battle, President JFK and Premier Nikita Khrushche came to an agreement. On October 28th Russia removed their weapons and United States agreed not to invade Cuba.

    Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) was a conference that the Soviet Union and U.S. talked about weapon control. They came to an agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles. President Nixon and Secretary Leonid Brezhnev were involved.

    The USSR finally fell becasue 11 out of 15 Soviet republic did not wish to be part of the USSR. Those Soviet republic want to be part of a commonwealth. During this time President Mikhail Gorbachev implemented radical reforms that the other Soviet republicans did not like which push for separation.
