This event was the climax of the Cold War, this was the closest that the world had gotten to a nuclear war.

    Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty was a series of meetings and an agreement between Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev on the limitations of missiles and specific weapons in their arsenals. The SALT agreement was to last for five years.

    Leonid Brezhnev and US President Gerald Ford made an agreement to set equal limits for missile launchers and strategic bombs but left out Cruise missiles. disagreement among the American Senate caused to agreement to stall and in response they refused to ratify the treaty. SALT agreements were intended to restrain the arms race in ballistic missiles armed with nuclear weapons.

    The soviet Union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and assumed complete military control. The Soviets then attempted to eliminate the mujahideen’s (backed by US) civilian support by bombing and depopulating the rural areas. After the Soviet invasion, progress towards furthering friendly relations between the west and Soviets halted and even moved backwards.
