Soviet Union Launches Sputnik
The Soviet Union launches the world's first satellite called Sputnik. This satellite is named Sputnik becuase that's satellite in Russian. Sputnik was about 184 pounds , travles at about 18,000 miles and hour and would circle the Earth once every hour and a half. Sputnik can be looked at with binoculars before or after sunset. In 1958 Sputnik deteriorated like expected and burned up into the atmosphere. Sputnik was launched to connect with the International Geophysical year for studies on Earth -
The Six Day War
The six day war started June 5th to June 10th and was between Israel, Egypt, Jordan and Syria. This war began when Egypt planned to capture Israel, which was seen by the Abrabs. The Israels air raided against the egyptian airfields. The egyptians have 960 attack aircraft and 50 runways. In about 3 hours of the war Egyptians air force was wiped out. After that Israel was attacked by Syria and Jordan. At last Israel claimed the lands that had historical importance. -
Detente
Detente is a word that means less tention and a better relationship between two countries. The example on detente used during the Cold War is when the U.S ad Soviet Union had fair relations. In this process the both will have to sign many treaties which make less nuclear weapons in each country. Ohter countries are on their way to deleloping such relations with different countiries. Detente is mostly worried about the relations between the United States and USSR. -

In this war there were about 15,000 Soviet Union soldiers died, 35,000 wounded and about one million Afghanistan's were killed.
All around the anti-government had a lot of supprt from other countries. like the U.S and Pakistan. -
USSR Invades Afghanistan
The Soviet-Afghan War lasted nine years until Feburary 15, 1989. This war was intentionally fought between the Afghan government and forgein mercenaries. Since the Afghan governement couldn't withstand the forgein mercenaries they had to seek aid from the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union came into the country it increased in mercenaries. Military forces against mercenaries blended into society made a big mess of death. -
1980 Olympic Hockey Game
The 1980 Olympic Hockey game is also refered as the Miracle on Ice for the American pop culture. This hockey game occured in Lake Placid, New York and was the defeat against Soviet Union National Team. This is something special because the Soviet Union had won the gold medal in the last six out of seven Olympic games. The scores between the two ended up being 4-3 with an attendance of approximately 8,500 people. The International Ice Hockey Foundation chose "Miracle on Ice" to be a #1 story. -
US Invades Grenada
The invasion of Genada in 1983 was a small rivalry between the U.S and Cuba when Regan was in office. A bloody success and threat to American students on the island gave the U.S a great excuse to eliminate the prime minister and and bring Marxists into power. At this time there were about 1,000 Americans in Grenada. This situation on Grenada had been a concern to Americans since 1979. Protestors come into conflict with the new government and violence started.
