    Truman Doctrine
    Truman asked congress for a four million dollars in economic and military help help for Greece and Turkey. Truman also recomended Americans to support people from all over.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    General George Marshall suggested that the United States give aid to all European nations that need it, and to fight against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos all over the world. In February 1948, congress approved Marshall Planafter Soviets took over Czechoslavia.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Soviets held West Belin hostage, cut off all water, highway, and train movement. The2.1 million people in West Berlin faced starvation. For 327 days America and Brittain flew food and supplies there, that the crew bought with there own money. A total of 277,000 flights and 2.3 million tons of supplies.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    Afraid of the Soviet Union, Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Brittain, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal joind the United States and Canada . The twelve countries fromed NATO, which stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and was a defensive military alliance.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, active communists, were accused of giving the Soviet Union information on the atomic bomb. They denied the charges, but were found guilty, and given the death penalty. The Rosenbergs died in the electric chair leaving behind two young sons. They were the first civilians exicuted for espionage.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    North Korea attacked South Korea. The United States was worried, because the north was communist, and communism was spreading. Presidnet Truman wanted to take military action, and on June 27, 1950, the United Nations helped South Korea. In July of 1953 the two sides signed and armistance ending the war.
  • Hydrogen Bomb

    Soviets made an atomic bomb, so the US had to make something stonger. Work on the H-Bomb started January 31, 1950. On November 1, 1952 the first hydrogen bomb exploded, with the force of 10.4 million tons of TNT. August of 1953, Soviets made one too.

    When West Germany joined NATO, Soviets created the Warsaw Pact. The Eastern Eurpoean nations were under its control.

    The New Left was the growin youth movement torwards many differnt activist groups. Demanded change in American society.
  • U-2 Incident

    U-2 Incident
    The CIA made secret flights and took pictures over Soviet territory in planes called U-2 planes that are designed to fly at high alltitudes. The U.S. began to get nervous about flying the planes, and Francis Gary Powers ended up getting shot down in his plane by Igor Mentyukov. The U.S. issued a false story to the public.

    Made by Kennedy, Volunteers give assistance to developing nations like Asia, Latin America, and Africa.The first year budget was $30 million. Volunteers were usually right out of college.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    President Eisenhower gave permission to train in secret, Cuban exiles. President Kennedy found about about this nine days after he got elected president, and approved the opperation dispite of his doubts. On April 17, 1400 Cuban exiles, landed back in Cuba. The attack went badly, and left America embarassed.

    Construction of Berlin Wall
    The wall seperated the city of Berlin into two, east and west berlin. The wall was lined with armed guards, that were limiting east german people from the west half of the city. The wall became a sign of Communism.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Castro from Cuba and Khrushchev from the USSR, were allies. In the summer of 1962, alot of Soviet weapons, including nuclear missiles were set up in Cuba. Pictures taken showed evidence that soviets were secretly making missile bases on Cuba. On October 22, Kennedy told America about the exsistence of soviet weapons in Cuba, anf his plan to remove them. The world, for 6 days, faces the possibility of nuclear war.On October 28, Khrushchev said he would remove the missiles from Cuba.

    The summer of 1962, alot of soviet weapons were being transported to Cuba. On October 14, pictures were taken showing soviets building missile bases on Cuba, other pictures showed missiles ready to launch. For six days, the world was terrified of the possible nuclear war.

    August 4, 1964 President Johnson announced that North Vietnam torpedo boats attacked the U.S. He asked congress for power to defend America. Congress approved, addopting resolution.

    President Kennedy was in Dallas, Texas going to give a speach. He had gotten shot in the head while riding in a car. He was rushed to the hospital, but didn't live.
  • Immigration Act of 1965

    Replaced quota for 170,000 immigrants from the eastern hemisphere, and 120,000 from the western hemisphere. No more than 20,000 persons from any nations per year. Close relitives of American citizens were exempt from the quota.

    The ground War (1965-1968) had no territorial goals, and there were body counts on television every nght. The air war('65-'68) where America bombed Hanoi for three years ongoing. Enemies were everyday people. In the end, the total cost was $150,000,000, 3,000,000 vietnamese lives, and 58,000 Americans were killed.

    Around the time of the Tet celebration, there were alot of funerals for the victims of the war. there were firecrackers, flutes, and coffins. ONly, it turned out that the coffins were full of weapons and the town people were Vietcong agents. They launched an attack 100 towns in South Vietnam and U.S. airbases, and embassy. it continued for a month, before U.S. could gain back control

    Defeat, until 1968. Nixon promised to restore law and order, and vaugely promises to end the Vietnam war.
  • Repeal of Tonkin Gulf Resolution

    Repeal of Tonkin Gulf Resolution
    President Nixon bombed and invaded Combodia with out telling the congress. Congress repealed the resolution, which had allowed the president full power.
  • Pentagon Papers

    Pentagon Papers
    Daniel Ellsberg leaked the papers. 7,000 pages, written for Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, the document revealed that there wasnt any plan to end the war and long as the North Vietnamese didnt stop. For alot of Americans, the papers only confirmed there distrust in the government.
  • War Powers Act

    Congress passed the act, which says that the president must inform congress within 48 hours if U.S. troops are to be sent into a hostile area with out a declaration of war. Also the troops can not stay more then 90 days, unless approved by congress or war is declared.

    March of 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became general secretary of the Communist Party in USSR. He wanted peace talks with the United States. He started holding free elections and stopped censorship. In the summer of 1991 a new revolution started. Gorbachev was forced out of office but 3 days later he was back. On August 24 he resigned as head of the Communist Party, and banned its role in the government. in December of 1991, 14 non-russian republics declared independence. The Soviet Union was gone
