    Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 the worlds first artificial satellite. Burned up on January 4, 1958 as it fell from orbit upon reentering Earth's atmosphere.

    Began when CIA-financed and trained group of Cuban refugees lands in Cuba and attempts to topple the communist government of Fidel Castro.

  • Creation of the Berlin Wall

    The wall was a blockade to stop East Germans from fleeing to the Democratic West.

    Leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense 13-day political and military standoff over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, 90 miles from U.S. shores.

    The U.S. and Soviet Union had agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals.

    A series of talks between U.S. and Soviet negotiators which sought to curtail the manufacture of strategic nuclear weapons.

    Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and immediately assumed complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the country. This event began a brutal, decade-long attempt by Moscow to subdue the Afghan civil war and maintain a friendly and socialist government on its border.

  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Midnight on November 9th, 1989, East and West Berliners reunited as the wall fell.

  • Fall of Communism in the USSR

    The Soviet Union fell on December 25, 1991, as the famous hammer and sickle flag descended for the last time. A few days earlier representatives from 11 different Soviet Republics met and announced that they wouldn't be a part of the USSR anymore and declared they would be a Commonwealth of Independent States.
