    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was an indirect way to warn the USSR. It stated that the United States would get involved to help out any country that was being threatened about being taken over by an armed minority. The Truman Doctrine was giving Turkey and Greece $400 million in military and economic assistance. No military forces were given to Greece or Turkey; only money. Greece and Turkey then became members of NATO because the Truman Doctrine set a tone of a U.S. foreign policy.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was created to rebuild Europe again. After World War II Europe was completely ruined and needed aid. The Marshall Plan was giving that to them. Sixteen European nations became apart of it. Nearly $13 billion was given in aid. Aid was not just given in money; it was given in food, fuel, staples, and machinery.
  • NATO Created

    NATO Created
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, was created to try and stop the spread of communism. It was between the U.S., Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, G.B., Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. It stated that if one of those countries were to get attacked, all of them would get involved. They had eachothers back. More countries have joined NATO more recently.

    Soviets create & test nuclear bomb
    When the Soviet Union set off their first atomic bomb, the United States was in shock. They had no idea that the Soviet had any knowledge towards nuclear weapons. President Truman's response was to build more nuclear weapons to stop the Soiviet Union. The code name of this bomb was First Lightning. It was tested at a remote site in Kazakhstan.

    When North Korea invaded South Korea, the United States and other UN nations got involved. This war was between the Communists and non-Communists. The USSR occupied North Korea while the United States occupied South Korea. The Korean War was fought for three years to try and stop the spread of Communism. At first the North Korean army was advancing fast; they had the South Korean army and some U.S. army in the south tip of Korea. After a few months the fighting was back to the 38 parallel.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    Julius Rosenberg was arrested because the United States government thought he was passing on atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. A month later, Ethel, his wife, was arrested for helping Julius out. They were both members of the American Communist Party. Julius and Ethel were sentenced to death because of the Espionage Act of 1917. Even after they were convited, they both plead their innocence.

    US creates and tests the hydrogen bomb
    The United States had created the worlds first thermonuclear weapon on Eniwetok toll in the Pacific Ocean. By creating this bomb, it put the United States back in the lead of the nulcear arms race. The Hydrogen bomb is about 1000 times more powerful than any other nuclear device. Oppenheimer, the creater of the atomic bomb, was also the creater of the Hydrogen bomb.
  • Warsaw Pact Created

    Warsaw Pact Created
    The Warsaw Pact was a treaty much like NATO. It was between the following countries: Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia. This treaty stated that members of Warsaw will come to protect any member who is attacked by an outside country or military.
  • The Vietnam War

    This war was fought between North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Communists while South Vietnam was supported by mainly the U.S. and other anti-Communist governments. U.S. citizens lost support in the war. The United States lost this war. The Communists had victory in 1975. The Americans proposed a mutual withdrawl from both forces. That didnt end up happening.

    Sputnick was an artificial satellite launched by the Soviet Union. This one event caused an even bigger one. It was the start of the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union. Sputnick caught the entire worlds attention. The United States feared that if the Soviet Union could launch satellites that they could launch other things, like missles.

    The Bay of Pigs was an attempt to invade Cuba and overthrow Castro. This was an unsuccessful invasion because the United States was defeted by the Cuban Army. President Kennedy let the Bay of Pigs happen because Castro took over all of U.S. business in Cuba.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    During the night, soldiers and construction workers from East Berlin started building this wall. The people of Berlin went to bed with no wall and woke up with a wall up. All communication was cut off between the two sides. East Berlin was the communist side, controlled by the USSR. The wall was put of to tighten up the boarder. Families ended up being divided and people became out of work due to the wall being put up.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    The United States got word that the Soviet was building nuclear weapons in Cuba. President Kennedy let Americans know of this; he had a navel blockage put up around Cuba. He was ready to go; anything to protect Americans. Nothing ended up happening because the U.S. and USSR came in agreement. USSR had to remove their missles. The U.S. had to remove their missles from Turkey and promise not to invade Cuba. This is the closest the Cold War became to becoming hot.

    US sends a man to the moon
    The United States found out that they were running behind in the race to space when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1. President Kennedy gave Americans hope in saying, "By the end of the decade they would land someone on the moon and return them home safely." Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. The United States had landed a man on the moon before the Soviet Union.

    Richard Nixon was the first U.S. president to visit China since it became Communist. He went there to try and imporve the relationship between China and the United States. The two leaders, Nixon and Enlai, agreed to expand their cultural contacts between the two countries. Nixon established permanent trade between China and the U.S.
  • Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba

    Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba
    He created the first Communist country in the Western Hemisphere. Castro did so by overthrowing the democratic governement. He increased the literacy rate, removing racism, and improving health care. Castro and the United States did not get along at all. They do not have any form of relationship, and the United States put an embargo on Cuba since 1960.
  • USSR invades Afghanistan

    USSR invades Afghanistan
    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to aid the Afghan Communist group during the Afghan War. The war was between the Communist group and anti-Communist Muslims. The Russians claimed that they were not invading Afghanistan, but that they were invited by the Armin Government. The Russians shot Armin on December 27, 1979. The Russians were in Afghanistan for 10 years.
  • 1980 Olympic Hockey game

    1980 Olympic Hockey game
    The United States was considered an underdog going into the Olympic games. They were ranked 7th out of 12 different teams. The United States beat the Soviet Union in the last seconds of the game. In the third quarter the Soviets tied the game three to three. The United States scored by making one more goal. The Soviet Union was considered to be on top of their game before entering the Olymipcs in 1980.

    Berlin is where the Cold War started and where it ended. The Berlin Wall symbolized the entire Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall ment that East Germans could cross the boarder. Gunter Schabowski, East German government official, pretty much made a statement about how the wall would be coming down. East Germans didnt think this day would ever come and it has. There was a huge celebration by the wall. Family members that have not seen eachother for years were able to meet again.

    Collapse of the Soviet Union
    The collapse of the Soviet Union showed the end of the Cold War. What used to be the Sovie Union was broken up into sixteen different countries. Not only did the Cold War end but the anti-Communists won against the Communists. Freedom was brought upon the entire west. The Soviet Union countries started declaring their independence from Russia. This is what caused the Soviet Union to collapse.
