     Mao Zedong and Communist Control of China
    -Communists had a stronghold in northwestern China.
    -Nationalist forces under Jiang Jieshi (jee•ahng jee•shee) dominated southwestern China.
    -Communsits and Natonalist both wanted control of China at the same time but both wanted it to either be Comunists and Nationalist.

     The arms race (threat of Nuclear War)
    -China had split into two nations.
    -One was the island of Taiwan, or Nationalist China, with an area of 13,000 square miles. Both wanted control but both wanted it different. half want communism the other wanted natrionalism.

    -A major goal of the Soviet Union was to shield itself from another invasion from the west.
    -Europe now lay divided between East and West. Germany had been split into two sections.
    -The Soviets controlled the eastern part, including half of the
    capital, Berlin. Under a Communist.

  • U.S. Containment

    U.S. Containment
    It was a policy directed at blocking Soviet influence and stopping the expansion of communism. Containment policies included forming alliances and helping weak countries resist Soviet advances.
    The US tired to block out the Soviet's in any way they could to try to stop it from getting worse. When the Soviets acted the way they did because they wanted to get back at the US.

    Truman Doctrine
    -Truman’s support for countries that rejected communism was called the Truman Doctrine. It caused great controversy.
    -Some opponents objected to American inter- ference in other nations’ affairs.
    - Others argued that the United States could not afford to carry on a global crusade against communism.
    - The US got invloved in this because they belived in the ideas of communism.
  • Marshrshall Plan

    • In 1947, U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall proposed that the United States give aid to needy European countries. -The Marshall Plan would provide food, machinery, and other materials to rebuild Western Europe. -The plan was a spectacular success. The US did this to give aid to needy European countries.
  • Korean War

    By 1949, both the United States and the Soviet Union had withdrawn most of their troops from Korea. The Soviets gambled that the United States would not defend South Korea. Soviets supplied North Korea with tanks, airplanes, and money in an attempt to take over the peninsula. June 25, 1950, North Koreans swept across the 38th parallel in a surprise attack on South Korea.

    NATO
    -European nations joined with the United States and Canada to form a defensive military alliance. It was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
    -The Soviet Union saw NATO as a threat and formed it’s own alliance in 1955.
    The Soviet Uunion saw NATO as a thrat to them which caused them to form their own alliance.
  • Berlin Blockade/Airlift

    Berlin Blockade/Airlift
    The Soviet Union cut off highway, water, and rail traffic into Berlin’s western zones. The city faced starvation.
    -In May 1949, the Soviet Union admitted defeat and lifted the blockade.
    The Soviet acted the way they did at first because they wanted to keep their forces divied from the US.

    -The Soviet Union saw NATO as a threat and formed it’s own alliance in 1955.
    -Included the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. The Soviet Union from the Warsaw Pact because they felt threatend by NATO
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    In Cuba in 1959 Castro started Revolutionary movements intriguing the Soviet Union In July of 1962 they built 42 Missile sites in Cuba American spy spotted them (october) They were too close so the president (John F. Kennedy) demanded that they be moved from Cuba (to much of a threat) also a “naval blockade of Cuba” Castro didn’t act well After much fighting Cuba agreed to get rid of the missiles if the U.S. promised not to invade them. Soviet Union no longer help

    -The August coup made the Communists angry - Gorbachev resigned - Estonia and Latvia declared independence - all 15 republics become independent - Made the CIS (without Baltic and Georgia) - Christmas day 1991 Gorbachev resigns (unions already dead)-East Germany closed borders - Honecker resigns (no authority) - U.S. president demands the Berlin Wall be taken down - East German leader (Egon Krenz) restores stability by taking it down
