Tristram Coffin Sr. was a royalist during the English Civil War. He chose to leave England when the king was deposed and Oliver Cromwell installed.

When Tristram Coffin Jr. came to Newbury with his parents, siblings, aunts, and grandmother in 1643, it was a frontier settlement with Indian tribes nearby, wild animals, few roads, and most travel by water. In 1642 there were only 455 people living in Newbury. The town’s economy was primarily a combination of agriculture and husbandry. There was a limited number of artisans and manufacturers. Some of the earliest were weavers, tanners, and shoemakers.

    Artemas W. Coffin
    Born in Albion, Died March, 1903, in Ashland, ME. Son of Grindall and Hannah Walker Coffin. He was one of the pioneers of Ashland, rmoving there soon after his marriage. He cleared a farm and cultivated it the remainder of his life. He was also a lumberman. In politics he was in later years a Republican. He was for a number of years selectman, collector of taxes for six years and a prominent citizen. He was active in the temperance movement and in the Baptist church.
