    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott decision was held in Washington, D.C. Dred Scott vs. Sandford was a courtcase in 1857. The supreme court ruled that African Americans could never be citizens. Scott's master had brought him from Missouri which is a slave state to Illinois, a free state. This case gave Scott no rights to file a lawsuit and to remain a slave.

    Election of 1860
    Southern states threatened to seceed from the Union if a Republican won the presidency. Lincoln won presidency against Buchanan. Lincoln received no electoral votes from the south. The south formed a group, the Confederates.

    This was formed by Lincoln. Proclomation didnt free any slaves immediately. This was a military action aimed at the states in rebellion which were the southern states. The proclomation gave the war a high moral purpose by turning the struggle into a fight to free slaves. Confederate were more determined than ever to fight to preserve its way of life.

    Freedman's Bureau
    In U.S. History, a federal agency, formed to aid and protect the newly freed blacks in the south after the civil war. President Andrew Jackson saw it unconstitutional. It regulated black labor under the new conditions. It was discontinued July 1, 1869.

    The 14th Amendment stated "all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the U.S. and state wherein they reside.     Republicans decided not to run the scandalist Grant for 3rd term. People sought to nominate candidates who could win the public's trust. Democrats turned to Samuel J. Tilden. Compromise of 1877 convinced Democrats that they should accept the commisions 8-7 vote. That lead Hayes to winning presidency.
