Chinua Achebe was born in Ogidi, Nigeria in 1930. He was born into a christian family. His family also believed in the traditional Ibo beliefs. This allowed Chinua to be very well adapted to this Ibo culture, and connect these beliefs in writing his book, Things Fall Apart.

He attended government college in Umuahia, and University college in Ibadan. He even recieved his BA from London University in 1953. Education was paramount to Achebe's success as a writer. Education is important to both Ibo and American cuture. He had also gained much knowledge in both white and African cultures and traditions from living/traveling in Africa, Europe, and America. This influenced him to write his first novel, Things Fall Apart.

It also shows what had happened to the Ibo society, a society of which Chinua was apart of, in the late 19th century. It describes how the Ibo community was effected when the colonizers and missionaries claimed regions in Nigeria. There have been 12 million copies published and was translated into 50 or more languages. It is still read in many schools throughout the world.

Chinua married Christie Chinwe Okoli. He also had four children, Chinelo, Ikechukwu, Chidi, and Nwando. Family is very important to Chinua. Family roles and beliefs are expressed greatly in Things Fall Apart. In ibo culture, a women has little to no freedom. However, in our culture, women do have freedom.
