Charles Sanders Pierce was born on Sep 10, 1839. His parents were Sarah Mills, and Benjamin pierce. His father Benjamin was an astronomer as well as mathematician.

In 1861, and during his time at Harvard, Charles joined his father as a computing aid. Helping him develop a more precise determination of the size of the Earth.

Charles graduated fro Harvard originally in 1859, but went back to Harvard two years later and got a degree in chemistry. In 1863, he graduated summa cum laude(the highest honors).

By age 31, and even though Charles's job was in physical science, he had published many papers on chemistry, philology, the philosophy of history and of religion, and the history of philosophy.

Pierce was known for his pragmatic views. In a magazine published in1877-78, he spoke of the scientific method and how it is only one of many ways of fixing beliefs and how beliefs are essentially just habits of action.

Charles aspired to hold a full time position in logic at Harvard. The closest he came to this dream was a lectureship in logic position he held at Johns Hopkins University.

Charles spent a lot of time in hius later life trying to develop his philosophy. In 1903, he identified it more narrowly in his lecture on logic of abduction.

The early 1900's came with a wave of new thinkers for pragmaticism.
But Charles was not happy with the current viewpoint or his original viewpoints. So he spent his last productive years (Approx. 1900-1910) working on his theories and philosophy. -
Charles Sanders Pierce died near Milford, PA. Unfortunately, he spent the last few years of his life in extreme poverty and illness.
