Causes of the American Revolution

  • Proclamation of 1763

    King George 111 made the Proclamation of 1763 by stopping all English Settlers from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. Everyone already settled had to move back east to avoid tension with the Native Americans. The colonists were very upset about not being able to settle west, especially because they wanted the Ohio Valley land.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act was made by the Parliament to pay the debt of the French and Indian War. It was also passed to pay for the new territories and already established colonies. The Sugar Act increased the tax of imported sugar and other items, like coffee, wine, dye, and textiles.
  • The Stamp Act

    The parliament passed the Stamp Act in March.This was the first direct tax on the American Colonies. The Stamp Act affected all printed materials to have tax on them.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre wasn't really a massacre, only three were killed. The Boston Massacre happened because harassed British soldiers, who retaliated by firing their muskets injuring eight people. The colonists make propaganda calling this incident a massacre, making the British look like the bad guys.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    A group of people calling themselves the "Sons Of Liberty" dressed as Indians and climbed aboard the Beaver, Eleanor, and Dartmouth. They dumped forty-five tons of tea into Boston Harbor. This was a defiance to the tea taxation by the British.
  • Quebec Act

    The Quebec Act allowed religious and civil government freedom. This act was mostly for Catholics. It could also be for anyone else.
  • Massachusetts Regulating Act

    This act had law officers subject to appointment of the Royal Governor. This act also banned town meetings that did not get approved by the governor. This gave the Royal Governor a lot of power.
  • Impartial Administration of Justice Act

    This act made it so the Royal Governor had control of jury trials. The Royal Governor of a colony could move trials elsewhere if he thought the juries in that colony wouldn't judge that case fairly. This gave the governor a lot of power.
  • The Boston Port Act

    The Boston Port Act closed the Boston Port until the price of the Boston Tea Party was covered. This act moved the capitol of Massachusetts to Salem. This also made Marble head the new official port of entry for the colony of Massachusetts.
  • Quartering Act

    The Quartering Act made it so royal troops could stay in homes or empty buildings if barracks were not available. This affected a lot of people because they could barely afford to feed their families. This led to the third amendment.
