    Catherine the Great was born in the German city of of Stettin on April 21, 1729(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Her parents Prince Christian August of Anhalt-Zerbst and Princess Johanna Elizabeth of Holstein-Gottorp(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Although born in German eventually came to Russia after getting married.
  • Marriage

    Marriage
    In 1745 at 15 years old she went to Russia and met the Grand Duke Peter who was 16(Encyclopedia of World Biography). They were named although the marriage could be questioned as Catherine herself said she was more attracted to the "crown of Russia" which would be passed to Peter(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Catherine had to be converted to the Russian orthodox faith as that was an important part when getting married to Peter(Encyclopedia of World Biography)

    In 1745 the Middlesex hospital in London was founded. The hospital was "for the sick and lame of Soho" until it was later shut down by Henry VIII(Lost Hospitals of London). The hospital consisted of beds, and had a large population(Lost hospitals of London). The population was sick and effected by smallpox greatly(Lost hospitals of London). The hospital was moved several times and had a lot of added rooms over time(Lost hospitals of London).

    In 1761 Leopold Avenbrugger "Inventum novum" to recognize chest diseases by percussion in Austria(W.Keith). Avenbrugger used percussion in diagnosis in a book(W.Keith). Over time his work got ignored when his ideas were adopted by french scientists and not gotten much credit(W.Keith).

    Removing Peter from his throne
    On December 25th,1761 Catherine became empress(Encyclopedia of World Biography). As Peter was soon to divorce her, Catherine was warned by many how she might not like her new status, confident Catherine ignored all warnings(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Eventually a group plotted to remove Peter from his throne to be replaced by Paul(7 year old son)and until the boy came to a certain age Catherine would be regent.(Encyclopedia of World Biography)

    Catherine's husband dies
    On June 28,1762 she was declared Catherine the Great by rallying troops of St. Petersburg to support her(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Peter was forced to leave the throne and was arrested(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Peter was kept in the country and died after his arrest from a fight.(Encyclopedia of World Biography)

    On September 22,1762 Catherine's coronation took place in Moscow(Tamara Talbot Rice).Catherine the great finally got what she wanted, power. Especially after her husband died she could take over. Catherine worked on a document to help those who want to reform the legal system for two years(Encyclopedia of World Biography).     In June 1767 the old laws were being revised with the "Instruction"(Encyclopedia of World Biography). The delegates were too focused on their own needs and not the task eventually leading to Catherine ending the meetings(Encyclopedia of World Biography). Catherine becoming very disappointed and decided to change other parts of Russia and leave the social and political aspect(Biography.com Editors).

    In 1774 Catherine made peace with Turkey for important gains after Austria and Prussia annexed Polish territory in the first partition of Poland(Biography.com Editors).After much drama and fighting between Russia and Turkey, Russia proved they are still an empire and gained more land(Biography.com Editors). Russia received the Black sea coast and merchant ships were allowed on the black sea and Dardanelles.(Encyclopedia of World Biography)

    In 1774 Johann Heinrich Pestalozzia a swiss educator finds a school for orphaned and neglected children so they can have a god and successful lives(Mark K.Smith). He came up with the "Pestaizzi method" that children should learn by doing things(Mark K.Smith). Children should be free to do what they like.(Mark K.Smith)

    In 1786 Catherine made a educational system(Biography.com Editors). She added to the many schools, even though she wouldn't carry out the entire plan(Biography.com Editors). Her educational system was also passed down to other reigns.(Encyclopedia of World Biography). She also changed the art system of Russia by opening many theater's(Biography.com Editors).

    In 1787 Russia was in war with Catherine the great, Catherine won a huge part of the Black Sea Coast(Biography.com Editors). Also gaining the Crimean Peninsula from the treaty of Jassy(Biography.com Editors). After a couple of years she once again faced confrontation(Biography.com Editors). She was in war with Ottoman empire over land control(Biography.com Editors).

    Catherine the great died on November 6, 1796 from a terrible stroke(Tamara Talbot Rice). Catherine the great died in St. Petersburg, Russia(Biography.com Editors). She had died before she could replace Paul with Alexander(oldest son) as her heir, because she doubted his ability to rule.(Tamara Talbot Rice)
