Holden gets into a fight

Holden messes around with his neigbor, Robert Ackley, finding out that Holden’s roommate Stradlater is dating Holden’s childhood crush, Jane Gallagher. A fight between Holden and Stradlater ensues, in which holden loses.

Holden has a realization

Mar 3, 1949

Holden realizes that Jane might have been sexually abused by her father, and then goes back to drinking. He then ends up running into his brother, D.B.'s ex-girlfriend.

Holden (thinks he) got shot!

Apr 4, 1949

Holden gets punched in the stomach after not paying the prostitute the doorman, Maurice, got him. Holden thinks he got shot afterwards. Agter trying to go to sleep, Holden says that he would commit suicide by jumping out the window, but he would worry about the people below looking at his splattered remains

Holden Over hears the little boy

May 5, 1949

Holden hears a little boy singing "If a body catch a body coming through the rye," and is cheered up by it, and Holden decides to call Jane. When Jane's mother answered the phone, Holden hung up, and prepared himself for his date with Sally, buying some tickets to a theater production called "I Know My Love" starring the Lunts.

Holden's psychotic break

Holden ends up walking around town while experiencing a psychotic break until the morning, and he feels like he will disappear every time that he steps off a curb. his solution is to hitchhike out to the west and live as a deaf mute so that he never has to talk or listen to anyone ever again.

Holden goes to say goodbye

Jul 7, 1949

Holden goes to Pheobe's school to say goodbye, and he starts to get extremely bummed out when he sees all of the vulgar graffiti.

Holden goes to the museum

Aug 8, 1949

Holden goes to the museum so he can kill time, ends up explaining mummies to two kids, and when he goes to the bathroom, he passes out. Holden sees this as yet another "f**k you" sign.

Holden goes to the zoo

Sep 9, 1949

Holden meets his sister, who has a suitcase, and she wants to run away with him. Holden says no, so they argue a bunch. After arguing, they finally decide to go to the zoo. Phoebe rides the carousel two times, and it makes Holden extremely happy.

Therapy

Oct 10, 1949

We finally learn that Holden has been talking about it, and that he's in therapy. With everyone asking him what he thinks about it, Holden says that he wished he had never opened up about it, because it made him miss everybody.
