Castiel dies to enable Sam enough time to regain control of his body and defeat Lucifer. He does this by sending Michael away temporarly using a holy fire. This action leads to his death when Lucifer kills him.

Castiel went into Lucifers cage which was a difficault task in order to rescue Sam from eternal torture which he didn't deserve.
