Carter G. Woodson was born in Buckingham County, Virginia.

In 1895, at the age of 20, Woodson entered Douglass High School, where he received his diploma in less than two years.

If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.

Mr. Woodson died on April 3, 1950 and Black History Month is his legacy.

The first celebration of the Black History Month took place at Kent State one year later, in February 1970.
