James Cook was born on 27th October 1728 in Marton, England. His father worked on a farm and James was one of eight children.

James Cook, aged 17, became an apprentice for a ship owner called John Walker in Whitby. This means he
learnt the skills, techniques and practices of handling a ship for an agreed amount of time for low wages. -
James Cook joined the Royal Navy in June 1755 at Wapping in East London as an ordinary seaman.

James Cook married Elizabeth Batts on 21st December 1762. They had six children, but Elizabeth outlived all her children and her husband and died in 1835 aged 93.

Captain James Cook set sail for the Pacific on the Endeavour ship. He headed to parts of the world that were unchartered, not recorded or located on a map.

Captain James Cook set sail again on the same journey. He travelled through extremely large areas of the Pacific Ocean and even into the Antarctic Circle.

Cook explored the northern Pacific and mapped extensive parts of North America and Alaska.

On 14th February 1779, Captain Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii.
