Canada and the Cold War

    The Nazis' are defeated and pushed into central Germany by the West and the Russians on the East. The west (Americans, and Canadians) go home, but the Russians do not. Canada liberates Holland.
  • United Nations is created

    United Nations is created
    The United Nations is an international organization of 26 countries that developed to keep and make peace all over the world. This was created after the League of Nations failed at preventing WWII. Canada is one of these 26 countries.
  • NATO is created.

    NATO is created.
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an intergovernmental military alliance. Members of this party agree to a mutual defense of one another if an outside force attacks. Canada is one of these countries.
  • Communists take control of China

    Communists take control of China
    Mao Zedong leads the Chinese Communist Revolution, and as a result China becomes communist when he takes power. unlike the united States, Canada saw China's government as a communist one. due to this mistake by the US the former Chinese government in Taiwan to have a seat in the united Nation's Security Council. Canada did not like this.

    Supported by the Soviet Union, North Korea invades South Korea to try and turn their government communist. The United States and Canada help South Korean troops fight against the Communist North.

    WARSAW pact created.
    The Warsaw Pact was the adversary of NATO. In its early days it acted as the Soviet Ministry of Defense. Its main purpose was to develop armies in Eastern Europe, so that the Soviet union could strengthen. This risked Canada because if the Cold War broke then the air attacks would have happened in Canada's air.

    The United States decide to help out South Vietnam in the attempt to defeat the communist North Vietnam forces. Canada sent in forces to keep peace under the Peace of Paris accords.

  • Lester Pearson diffuses the Suez Crisis.

    Lester Pearson diffuses the Suez Crisis.
    The Suez Canal was a trading route that was owned/controlled by France and Britain. On Oct 29, 1956 Egypt took control of it. War broke out between Egypt and the Soviet Union on oneside and Britain, France, and Israel on the other. Canada's Minister of External Affairs, Lester Pearson, saw that something needed to be done in order to keep theses forces apart, and so he went to the UN with a plan. His plan was to physically put peacekeepers in the Canal with their hands up to stop them.

    In one night the communist east Berlin officials built a wall splitting Berlin right down the center of the city splitting it between communist and non-communist Berlin. By doing this supplies were cut off for west Berlin.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Soviet Russia decides to place Nucular missiles in Cuba, which resulted in great embarrassment for the United States because Cuba served as a resort for many American's and now Communism was right under their noses. To retaliate, the Americans sent their navy to surround Cuba. They did this so that they could monitor Cuba and keep soviet ships out. This caused many Canadians to be afraid because if either side of the battle decided to attack then that would mean the end of the world.

    This was a war that lasted for nine years between the USSR Communists and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The Soviets placed 350 missiles in Eastern Europe in preparation for their attack on Afghanistan which eventually came. After a couple of months they invaded and appointed a new leader whose name was Babrak Karmel.

    Berlin Wall is torn down.
    The crashing of the cement slabs from the Berlin wall represented the end of the Cold War. The Communist East Berlin decided that it was time for the wall to be torn down. This affected Canadians Because it allowed them to relax after the long stressful years of the Cold War.
