Brain Deaths in Hockey

  • Owen McCourt

    Owen McCourt
    Owen McCourt died the morning after a big fight between two hockey teams, where he suffered a brain injury and was left unconscious. (age about 22, born circa 1885)
  • Bill Masterton

    Bill Masterton
    Bill Masterton died from an on-ice injury where he fell backwards headfirst onto the ice after being checked. The hockey players did not wear helmets back then. He suffered a massive brain hemorrhage which the doctors could not perform surgery on, and he died two days later. Played for Minnesota North Stars. (age 29)
  • Paul Fendley

    Paul Fendley played for the NHL and died after his head hitting the ice. He wore a helmet but it came off before falling after being checked. (age 19)
  • Alexander Krevsun

    Alexander Krevsun died of a brain hemorrhage. (age 22)
  • Don Sanderson

    Don Sanderson
    Don Sanderson died from hitting his head on the ice after a fight in which his helmet fell off. He lost consciousness, went into a coma for three weeks then died. (age 21)
  • Robert Muller

    Robert Muller
    Robert Muller was diagnosed with a brain tumor which resulted in brain cancer which he died from. (age 29)
  • Reg Fleming

    Reg Fleming
    Reg Fleming was an enforcer who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Buffalo Sabres. He died while at a rehab after suffering from a stroke and heart attack. Posthumous scans showed evidence of CTE. (age 73)
  • Bob Probert

    Bob Probert
    Bob Probert was a huge enforcer who played for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks. After he died, scans showed evidence of CTE. (age 45)
  • Rick Martin

    Rick Martin
    Rick Martin died from heart attack while driving. Scans showed stage 2 CTE. He was the first non-enforcer to have been diagnosed with the disease. Played for Buffalo Sabres and LA Kings. (age 59)
  • Derek Boogaard

    Derek Boogaard
    Derek Boogaard was another giant enforcer who played for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers. He died from an accidental overdose of oxycodone and alcohol. His brain showed CTE evidence and sparked a very public controversy about fighting in ice hockey and early death. (age 28)
