Wharton was born in Ghana and moved to England to study as a missionary teacher.

Viv Anderson is seen as the pioneer for black professionals. He made his debut in a 1-0 win over Czechoslovakia.
Anderson later went on to make 30 caps, scoring 2 goals.

Keith Alexander became the first black head coach of any professional English team when Lincoln apponted him.
He went on to manage Ilkeston Town, Northwich Victoria, another spell at Lincoln City,Peterborough United and Macclesfield Town.

Ruud Gullit became the first black manager to manage in the english Premier League.
He was apponted manager of Chelsea and also became the first Black coach to win silverware when he won the FA Cup in 1997
First black British manager to mangage in the EPL
Paul Ince became the first British black manager to manage in the Premier League.
His reign was short lived though as he was sacked after only 21 games.
