Baby Nic arrives
Vicki and David SHeff both living in Berkeley, California in a house hidden from the streets behind a wall of black bamboo and was built in in the 1920's. As soon as their ultrasound appoitment ended, they prepared for his arrival. They paint and decorate the room wih a white crib, light blue dresser, bookshelves stocked up on Maurice Sendak and Dr.Seuss. Vicki starts having contractions at 12:00 am on July 20, 1982. At dawn Nic has arrived. -
Vicki and David Sheff get a divorce
Vicki and David’s marriage led to a divorce. They have visited a couples therapist but that didn’t work out. They both decided that joint custody would be best for Nic. They both hired divorce lawyers. Often judges recommend a child psychologist for those young children that are going through a parents divorce. Nic will spend the school year with David, holidays, and summer break with Vicki in southern California. -
Nic starts kindergaren
Nic is five and starting kindergarten in San Francisco at a hundred-year-old school. Nic’s creativity starts to unravel in clay and finger painting. He was asked to write an article titled “Nic Picks Flicks.” Then Nic turns six and he decides to make donations of his games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders, and books in his bookshelves to the Toys for Tots Christmas Program -
David and Karen Meet
A friends dinner party in Manhattan is where a friend convinces David to get Karen’s phone number. He phones her at her parent’s house the next day. They keep in touch with letters and phone calls. When Karen travels to San Francisco, David introduces Nic and Karen. -
Nic Starts the fourth grade
Nic is now in fourth grade and plays in a little league baseball team. His coach says he’s a leader and center of attention. He is taking part of plays and dinner parties. He is casted to be on television for a commercial and Nic decides to open a college savings account with the money he earns from the commercial. -
Nic starts the 7th grade
Nic enters the seventh grade. He lost interest in the carpool kids and are hanging out with the skaters. He likes to listen to Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Primus and Jami Hendrix. In early May, David picks Nic up after school and smells cigarette smoke. Nic admits that he took a few puffs, but Nic promised not to do it again. About a week after that, David is packing a bag for Inverness for Nic and finds a small bad of weed. -
Jasper is born
Jasper is born in early December. Nancy and Don, Karen’s parents take Nic to the hospital as Jasper is only a few hours old. -
Daisy Arrives
Daisy is born. Daisy’s real name is Marguerite. Karen decided on a C-section and the same day as her mother’s, Nancy’s birthday. She is twenty on inches long and eight pounds heavy. -
Nic starts the 8th grade
Nic is now in the eighth grade and he stopped hanging out with skater kids and started hanging out with surfer kids. He is doing better in school and is motivated to get into a private high school. He is now 13 years old and David and Nic go surfing together. The private school Nic is interested in is a school of arts. -
Nic starts high school
Nic starts his freshman year in the private school he has been interested in. There are many programs of the arts, math, science, journalism, and English. In a month of being in high school, Nic is on the freshman basketball team. He has also got a role in a play. Nic loves the teachers at his new school and his friends seem to be a good influence. He has been doing all his work and still has time for Jasper and Daisy. An afternoon in May, David receives a call from the dean that Nic has bought -
Nic is a sophomore
Nic, fifteen, and a sophomore in high school is on the swim team. He has dedicated himself to it. Nic also joins the water-polo team as co-captain.
