Davids Past
David wasn't a saint either growing up, he tried about every drug known to man to Marijuana,cocaine and meth. He talks a lot about Meth and how the body absorbs it and how once it enters the bloodstream "its a near-instant flume ride to the central nerve system(sheff 107). And Nic has join that scary ride, he never thought this would happen to his son but it has. -
Nic's birth and toddler years
Nic was born on July 20 1982 , San Francisco, California. Growing up you could tell Nic was a very speical child. At around age 3 his parents get a divorce and share custody with Nic. Vivki Nic's biological mother moves to Los Angeles. He first attended kindergarten at a prestige school in San Francisco. Nic was an adventoures child and loved to play. when his father married Karen Nic instanly fell in love . Karen is David second wife and had become a second mother to Nic. -
Nic's Adolescent Years
Nic made friends easily through middle and high school. He was a very outgoing kid and spent time out with his friends a lot. Nic had a few bumps during this time, it all began when he entered his fathers car and smelled like cigarettes. He denied it saying "that he was hanging out with some kids who were smoking"(Sheff 47). David pressed him for the truth and thats when he admitted to it. His father was disappointed in him and Nic promised him he would never do it again. -
The First Time and Lake House
One day as David was packing Nic's Overnight Bag he found a little bag of Marijuana. Nic was outisde playing with his friend when David approaches him and questions Nic about the majiuana. Nic says that he brought from a friend and that it was his first time, David is unsure if he is lying or not but believes Nic. David also finds out that Nic had drinked alcohol during thier ski trip to lake tahoe. Nic and his friend were bored one night and drinked everything they found in a liquor cabient. -
Nic Goes missng
A couple years later Nic attended a trip to Paris and when he came back David described him as "He looks terrible. His hair is shaggy and unkempt. Black circles under his eyes"(Sheff 83). During one night Nic and Daivid take a walk around the neighborhood all of a sudden Nic pulls out a joint and tells David he wants to smoke. Daivd then takes a hit of the joint and when they return home he realizes maybe smoking with Nic was not the best choice. A couple weeks later Nic robs the family of cash, -
Nic's First Rehab
"It sinks in. God no. I am horrified that Nic had used meth"(Sheff 104). David forces Nic to go to a rehab center after been mising for nearly a week and learning he had tried meth. The first rehab Nic goes to is called the Thunder Road, Nic is very reluctant and puts up a fight to not go, but David gives him an Ultimatum if he wants to be cared for then this is the only way. Nic finally budges and goes. After going to the center the counselor at Thunder Road says Nic's condition was really out. -
Nic's Second rehab
The counselor at Thunder Road suggested that he goes to the Ohlhoff center for another evaluation. David takes nic to the Ohlhoff center and speak with a counsler. The counsler says "Nic doesnt acknowledge that he is an addict"(Sheff 128) and the next morning they check him into the twenty-eight day program. Nic has a family session with David and Karen but he seems to care less if they are there or not. After a couple of weeks Nic annouces that he won't be going to college. -
Nic's third rehab
David allows Nic to leave the Ohlhoff center to go to a Halfway house but soon Nic vanishes and relapses again. As the Ohlhoff recovery center didn't work out they try a third rehab called the St.Helena' Hospital, it was simliar to the one Nic was previously at but more advanced in activites and meetings. Nic's graduation and going to college
Nic finally graduates the St. Helenas program and was preparing to go to college in the fall. Nic was attending regular AA meetings and finally getting on the right path. He was going to college at Hampshire college. Weeks pass by and it is finally August, Karen and David fly east with Nic to help him get settled in. Nic would be staying in a sober-living dorm to help him through his sobriety. Nic a month later relapses but soon recovers when offered a great opportunity with his professor."if yo -
Nic is found in Nancy's Home
Nancy is Nic's step grandmother, Karens mother. She finds Nic inside her basement one day while during laundry. Nic looked miserable and strunged out on drugs. Nancy was frightened to see her grandson like this, Nic looked almost unrecognizable and looked as if he didn't sleep for days. Nancy tells Nic that he should've have told her he was gonna be staying but Nic doesn't really listen as he is still high. Nic than leaves his grandmothers abruptly and she is left stunned. She calls David . -
Nic and Karen
Karen and Nic had always had a good relationship even at a young age. Karen came into Nic's life around the age of nine and ever since then they have been such great companions. Karen has been emotinally supporting David through all this but soon betrayed by Nic. One day David walks in to find Karen upset about what Nic had done. He forged a check for himself under Karens name, she felt wounded and hurt by this act, David knew he couldn't make any more excuses for him anymore(Sheff 187). -
Nic Hits Rock Bottom
One Sunday morning, David gets a phone call around five am and it is Nic's stepfather. He told David that Nic had an overdose and was in a hospital in Brooklyn, He flies to New York and meets with Nic's doctor. He tells David how lucky Nic is and how close to death he really was. The overdose does not stop Nic from leaving the hospital. Not even an overdose will make Nic change or stop harming himself.(Sheff 200). -
Nics 4th Rehab
After a couples months pass Nic decides to go to rehab again for the 4th time after speaking with his father. Hazelden was apparently one of the nations best rehab facilities. Nic would be attending the rehab for 6 months or depending on how well he does through the program.After months pass Nic was beginning to progress and was checking in with David regularly but than the program shuts down and Nic relocates to Los Angeles to live near his mother and stepfather(Sheff 210). Nic Goes Downhill
After moving to Los Angeles things seemed to be lighting up for Nic but that doesnt last very long. One Day David calls Z, Nic's girlfirend who then preceeds to tell him that Nic was going to break into Vic's house and steal a computer "as if it was like borrowing sugar"(Sheff 283). David calls Vickie to only find out that Nic had broken in and was tweaking very hard, he was unable to get out. Nic's back
Nic completed his 6th rehab in Santa Fe and has been sober for a year. He and his father chat regularly, thye have become much closer and have a stronger relationship. Nic has a girlfriend and working in a coffee shop, He has started writing again and plans to come out with a book. Nic seems to finally be on the right track of progress and hopes to continue this path for a long,long time.(Sheff 307-309)
