The Preliminary Bombardment
As preparations for the assault on the island of Okinawa had begun the US had sent Naval elements to bombard the shoreline positions. Sending 13,000 rounds of artillery fire guns as well as 3,905 sorties of plans had fired. Aiming at landing sites of Hagushi and Chatan Beaches. -
Battle of Okinawa begins
The official start of the battle of Okinawa begins. Morning of April 1st US Navy ships carry a pre- landing bombardment. Sending 44,825 shells and 33,000 rockets and 22,500 mortar shells. Two US divisions had landed along the southwest coast of Okinawa, as result no Opposition nor casualties had occurred. -
US Attacks
As the US marine enter through Okinawa seeping through Northern side. They take two airfields with barely resistance. As they are moving they also encounter the third of the troops, as these had little to no combat experience while being drafted to Japanese defensive army. US Advances to the deep north side with not much threat. -
Persistent fighting
US had located the defense of Japan on the southern side of Okinawa. As US move farther inland the Battle of Okinawa intensifies. Japanese begin to concentrate battling the inland. US decide to split into two division combating the assaults separately. -
Kamikaze Attacks
400 Kamikaze planes had been unleashed on American Naval forces in the pacific. Opening fire and sinking 157 battleships that had been attacked by aircraft fire. Japanese had also lost 1,100 planes. -
Operation 10-Go
Japanese prepared a surprise attack on the fifth fleet to eliminate the troops but allied had spotted them and had alerted the troops. Resulting more so a suicide mission,as result the ship was counter attacked and had sunken down along with it's crew mates. -
Capture Of Ie Shima
largest airfields in Asia Pacific region was needed to provide support to the battle of Okinawa. April 16 naval saturated the beach head became US infantry division. The area defended by 7000 soldiers who hid away from plain site of the enemy. Japanese had been surrounded but managed to hold resistance for 6 days using their artillery. April 21 Le Shima was secured, killing 110,000 japanese soldiers, 149 captured and 150,000 Okinawa civilians dead, and 49,000 Americans dead. -
The Fall Of Shuri
May 29 , as US takes over the Shuri castle being the most protected base of the Japanese they had captured Sugar Loaf Hill, Conical Hill, Chocolate Drop Hill and Naha capital city of west. majority of Japanese retreat after escaping Japanese had no form of defense. Shuri was left defenseless and in the hands of the US. -
Who won the battle of Okinawa
As wanting to bring the war to an end, millions of Japanese were waiting for american troops to fire. Instead an atomic bomb was used on Hiroshima on August 6. As the atomic bomb hit japan did not surrender having forced Truman to order another bombing on Nagasaki on August 9th. After this bombing Emperor Hirohito had announced the surrender which had marked the end of WW2.
