in 1963 Bas went on to earn his B.A. in philosophy from the University of Alberta.

Following his B.A. at the University of Alberta, Bas went on to gain his M.A. and Ph.D in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1980 Bas published his book The Scientific Image. In this book Bas describes constructive empiricism. Constructive empiricism is a view of science, that a theory is empirically adequate. Currently Professor Bas van Fraassen works at San Francisco University. He teaches philosophy of science, philosophical logic, and the role of modeling in scientific practice. Bas van Fraassen has been teaching since 2008.
